Help with what these bits are and what are they for?

Hi all,

Been trying to fix a rear entertainment system in the back of the x5 (2005) and come across a few bits that I wonder what they are for, so I'd appreciate any thoughts and answer:



These 3 cables come out of the centre console, below rear cup holders and the aux in/out plugs and TV button.



The above is what the 3 plugs look like.

Any ideas what these are for?

Also, there is a rubber strap under the spare wheel, seems to be coming from under the battery cover bolt down thing that is between spare wheel and battery:



There is also a empty plug that looks like an obd2 type connection, it's in spare wheel well at the tail gate right side:



Now I know this is a ski hatch before the banter kicks in, but, I think this is sealed up. Can't get it to open up at all, so wonder if all cars have the hole but only those with optional ski hatch got a blocking plate that can be dropped down, others without option were blocked off?



Last one, for now  ::) is that looking at fuses in rear compartment, fuse 77 (I think) is marked up as rear seat adjustment and carries the correct rated fuse. I've checked it's just not a spare stuffed in blank slot, but the slot has the metal contacts in. Given I can't find any adjustment buttons to indicate that the rear seats do move, either in boot or pillars etc, I don't think I have adjustable seats, so what the heck else would be on that fuse? Any ideas?

Plugs look like either an early PlayStation or similar video hardware.  A few owners fitted the PS1 so it could be from that?

Ski hatch is welded shut unless the original order included a ski bag.  No idea why, but that's what they did.  Same with the E46 unless you had either a ski bag or Harmon Kardon HiFi option - it was where the sub went.

The wiring will be in place for the rear seat adjustment even if not ordered at build, so may be the fuse went in too?  The loom seems to have been pretty much an all-in-one version with kit plugged in as the car went down the line.  The plug you found will be for one of the options not fitted.

Strap could be for lifting or securing the battery?  The black dome is the air suspension compressor system and the large black straps are for lifting the spare out using the lower tailgate - in case you had not found that out.  Makes life much easier.

Cheers both, didn't know if the cables were part of the entertainment setup which isn't working. Although figured out screens are fine, dvd changer fine, it's just the cable between that's duff. Not a bad fix except well buried in everything lol. PO forgot to give me the headsets though, and promised to post - low and behold, he didn't bother and know ignores all calls and texts, what a cockroach! So need to figure out how to get audio as well.

Thanks for confirming all the other bits. Need to get the grinder out and open that hatch up!

Two further questions if I may, should the TV be viewable in the back? Think rear set up is aftermarket, definitely not factory so assume not, especially since its not the best in the world.

And lastly, what's best route for being able to listen to music from phone? Ie Bluetooth or cable etc. Didnt see any spare ports on back of nav screen, just 2 plugs in the 2 holes.

The E53 never supported Bluetooth streaming as the tech didn't exist.  BMW released a kit which plugged into the Aux port on the head unit and ran a cable to the glovebox where a 3.5mm socket was placed.  You bought a 3.5mm jack to jack lead to connect in.  It offered no control functions at all.  I had it in my E53 but soon switched to a Dension ICE>Link system (no longer made and crap support!)

I believe it is possible to get the BM54 amp upgraded to allow BT Audio via a company called Carphonics.  Have a look on the Forum for that and the name 'Baris' who comes highly recommended.  He also repairs faulty amps.

Can't help with the TV in rear, sorry.  You should have a hybrid TV receiver by 2005 as fitting started in late 2004 builds.  You will need TV in motion enabled otherwise it shuts the video off when in gear and moving.

Thanks x5, will check that out. Must admit, the stereo and audio is crap, I'm surprised as always had good stuff in merc, rangies and jags, in fact my alfa gt (same year as the x) has a pretty decent full bose setup that sounds great and has a sub that really works. The x doesn't even have a sub lol, slightly disappointed to be honest, but it's still a decent motor, so can live with it.
