Looking at that, I've got off lightly, only got to fit new battery  :)

How long do you reckon that lot will take?

I had my E53 for 2 years and only had to fit a battery, and that was as a precautionary measure.
So far since I picked up the X3, I've fitted 4 new tyres, bought glow plugs and glowplug relay. Ordered both thermostats as well as some blanking plugs for the swirlflap removal job.
Hopefully that will be it for a long while.
I'm hoping to have it all done in an afternoon, then once the thermostats arrive next week I will tackle that job next Saturday afternoon.
Still got the HIDS and sidelights to do at some point, but that can wait. I need to get it in a serviceable state so that it regents the DPF.
I'm finding the fuel consumption is worse than my E53 at the moment, hopefully the thermostats will sort that out as it's only reaching 67 degrees are the moment, it's getting up ere ok but the stat must be opening too soon, or the EGR one is stuck open.
Fingers crossed the glowplugs come out without snapping, plenty of WD40 and my blow lamp.

Had the intake manifold off this afternoon to fit new glowplugs and glowplug controller.
Whilst I had the manifold off I removed the swirlflaps and fitted blanking plugs.
The job took me about 4 1/2 hours. What a mare of a job, the controller is tucked away on the side of the engine block. I had take off the cola t pipe over the top of it in the end as I couldn't get into remove the large plug underneath.
Also very stressful removing the glowplugs as they have a history of snapping off in the head!!!
Plenty of WD40. Kept soaking them whilst doing the swirl flaps and controller.

Image that's the controller with the printed numbers on it, below the coolant hose, had to be carefully undoing the hose manifold as didn't want any coolant to get in to the intake port next to it.

This is the intake manifold with the new blanks fitted.

I had a pain doing my glow plug controller as I did it with the inlet manifold still on.

How dirty were your swirl flaps?

This was mine @54k miles

Mine were similar, yes inlet valve and EGR cooler are different.
The EGR valve is to blame for all that carbon build up, I noticed it's a vac controlled one on mine so could just blank off the vac pipe with a golf tee.
