Wirring noise in dash
Wirring noise in dash
Morning all.
Got in this morning sat down and thought, nice, then i heard a quiet whirring noise behind the dash, didnt even
have the key in the ignition.
Not heard this before in the 3 weeks of ownership. Started up and drove a few mins to garage where am getting a few jobs done i cant do at home.
Noise still there. Left it till i collect later.
Any ideas welcome.

In the centre console there are all your climate controls & buttons + display... there is a 1 inch mini grill each side & the left one has a tinsy fan behind to pull air over a thermistor.... if the fannis gunked up with fluff it may be out of balance hence making a small noise....
there is another fan in the computer module case under the bonnet im led to believe... both these are noticeable if you are lokking for them.

Re: Wirring noise in dash
X5-Sport may have the definitive answer, but there is a Fan on the Webasto unit, the computer & also the interior temp sensor...
My guess is that some of these will run until the vehicle sleeps... which is approx 15 minutes after you lock up.
Now you know it's there you will always hear it lol... like the webasto "tick" on cold morning starts etc..

ah yes i know the webasto tick, mine does not tick, after many no starts, i found no fuel is getting to the webasto.
i attached a 12v to the supply to the pump by unplugging the supply wire from the heater and even though i can make the pump tick by pulsing it still no fuel will get drawn up to the heater. any ideas on that one ? i was going to access underneath and have a look at the pump, maybe it needs priming but cant find info on this problem.

Re: Wirring noise in dash
I'd start a new thread on the Webasto unit, as this is a topic in its own right.
I've never stripped one, but many people here have.
There are lots of potential issues with these devices... and im sure it will be a simple answer...
luckilly the weather is warm enough that you don't need it to work for another 7 months , so you got plenty of time to fix it.
In the summer, the price of these units will fall too, because they are not needed desperately lol

Re: Wirring noise in dash
If the car has been awakened (unlocking will do it) then there could well be hardware running behind the dash.

Re: Wirring noise in dash
You get a whirring when you wake the car up, I thought that was the ballast (some people call it the Webasto, but as it does sweet FA, it might as well be ballast!) cutting in. But you said it was still going after a short drive and being parked

Oh, the advantages of the hard of hearing, only yesterday my wife described the noise she was hearing, immediately identified as the ball rattling in a spray can in the boot. I can barely hear it when I'm shaking it.
