How to turn car over without starting

Post by Upex » Mon Apr 17, 2017 9:18 am

Hi all, Been looking how turn the car over without actually starting and can't find anything, anyone any ideas?

Don't think pulling fuse pump will work as enough diesel in pipes etc.

Need to get the pressure up for the new turbo before starting, and not sure how lol

Under a turbo swap presently (fingers crossed it fixes her!)

Disconnect power to the injectors?

You could try injecting new oil from a syringe into the turbo oil feeds before assembly so the bearings are lubed.

At idle speed the turbo won't be spinning very fast anyway, and you won't get much oil pressure at cranking speed either - though enough to Prime it of course  :)

I will put as much oil in the feed pipe as poss before buttoning it up, but it's fairly horizontal, so don't think it'll hold much, rather spill out when installing.

Found 1 suggestion of removing glow plugs, but knowing my luck, one or more will break off, so I'm not touching them lol, ratchet take 6mths off the turbo life but just starting with as much oil as I can get in her lol.

Any ideas how to disconnect injector power x5sport?

Did think I could leave fuel rail pressure sensor off (did that in error after cleaning inlet manifold and she wouldnot start, made me pucker up I can tell you!)

There is a power connector on each injector, or follow the wires back in their loom and disconnect them at that point.

Glowplugs are probably a risky area as you say.

If the turbo oil feeds are easy to get at them you could try plastic pipe clamps and fill the pipes with oil then clamp them off?

Like these.  I use them to clamp off pipes to stop spills.

I've not done a turbo on a BMW but the ones I've done on French things I've always just pulled the fuel pump relay and turned the engine over a couple of times at first..... Just quick little flicks of the key 3-4 times then wound it over until the oil light goes out... Again I've done that a couple of times

When you prime the turbo before fitting it use a thicker oil than the 5w30 the engine normally uses I use a 15w40..... There isn't much of it in there so it won't have any long term effect but because it's not as runny it stays in the turbo better

That's a good shout Ian, least buys a bit more time before the feed properly starts, thanks. 90w180 it is  :))

X5sport, yeah of course, kind of stupid question eh, thanks. Have so much going on in my head right now, don't know if coming or going.

Understandable.  I think the fuel pump relay is above the fuse box in the front.

Thanks x5sport. I'll have a look.
For now, awaiting parts, then reassemble and then deal with the priming and such lol.

This piccie from Realoem may help.  It is left side above front fusebox which you need to drop down  :)

It failed on our E53 and no matter how hard the car cranked it would not start - hardly surprising now I know what broke.
