Driveshaft lateral movement

Post by Junkie » Fri Feb 04, 2011 11:10 am

Hi all,

I've been trying to trace a knock from the front suspension area, all the bushes, anti-roll bar and balljoints seem intact and I have changed the drop links before so confident regards what I'm looking at.

What I have found, however it may be normal, is that both front driveshafts have about 10mm play laterally.

Now I expect some movement as the CV joints are naturally engineered that way, but the metal to metal noise when I move them by hand could be the mysterious noise I hear when driving. CV joints are packed with grease so it's not that they are running dry, just puzzled where the noise is coming from apart from that.

Anyone had a similar experience? Mileage is 75K but one CV joint has been replaced last year.

Next time you have the car on a ramp or the wheels off, give the driveshafts a wiggle and see what play there is.
