Tyre insurance

Post by acideraser » Fri Feb 04, 2011 11:19 am

While discussing BMW insurance and other options, tyre insurance was mentioned. The tyre insurance offered by the dealer as well as the others found on the internet have claim limit of £200 while the cost of 1 run-flat for x5 if is from £260 to £350 with Kwick-fit and probably even higher with BMW dealer. Also understood that there is a limit of 1 claim a year and total 4 or 5 claims for the period of insurance.

So I wonder if anyone here actually claimed under tyre insurance and were satisfied with it or easier just to buy new tyre if you have a puncture?

Also hear that with run-flat tyres if one if one is punctured it's better to change a pair of them in order to have similar wear ?

thanks

It can take time to get replacement run-flats. I've had two go in the last four years and the car was off the road for two days the first time. I then bought a spare wheel and tyre to keep in the garage just in case, and had to use it when I had another go. I only changed the single tyre and had no issues by doing so. Having a run-flat go is a pain in the backside as nobody carries them as stock, you almost always have to wait a couple of days to get one.

and wrt to the insurance, doesn't seem worth it to me. Never had it on mine.

Interesting, i have just checked my policy which was purchased from the dealer but underwritten by Auto Protect. I have and individual claim limit of £250 and can claim up to 5 tyres over the 3 year policy with no limit in any one year. As far as changing both tyres due to one getting a puncture, thats sounds firstly kin expensive and secondly a load of $hite. It is getting more common that tyres companies can repair RFT's the OH's 1er had a puncture (Bridgestone) repaired last summer with no issue. I have seen on other forums that some manufacturers don't allow repairs, so best to check when you get your car to see what is fitted and make enquiries.

just wanted to check with people who has experience with RFT, all the puncture I've ever had in my life were on normal tyres so repaired hence had no issues with different thread depth.

Have anyone ever tried to claim under the tyre policy? I am particularly concerned what happens if you travel in Europe get a puncture and need emergency tyre change - will they pay you for the tyre without hassle or it does not work like this at all ?

sorry for being so pedantic

When I picked up my car the dealer gave me the "you know what to do, know what I mean? Know what I mean? Nudge, nudge! Know what I mean? Say no more! A nod's as good as a wink to a blind bat, say no more, say no more!" speech, so far I haven't though. :D

Is it also correct that 'tyre insurance' covers you whether you have run flats or not?

Yes that is correct, well at least on my policy. As must BMW's are now on RFT's i would be surprised if any policies did not cover them. It is stated in the policy that if you get a puncture in a RFT and it is repairable and allowed by the manufacturer then they will not replace the tyre only repair.
