glow plug faults or not

Morning all
For the last 2 days in th ecold snap the outside temp here on morning was 2.5c according to the car.  On starting up the car was instant,  is there a temp when the pre heating of glow plugs comes on ?  i ask this becuase the other day when i ran a code fault scan while learning how the tyre pressure monitor works, there were 6 faults in the DDG module  ,  all were red and each glow plug was listed,  now  when i got the car  this fault was on so i cleared it and its never been on since., until other day. Then again it may have registered in the time since last scan.
after clearing the fault it reappears straight away but as i said the car started fine, noticed this on other modules as well, they seem to be clear , then faults appear that dont seem to affect the car at all, i clear them, they stay off a while then reappear.
Is everyones like this ?

What codereader did you use?

I think I've had all 6 plus out since had the car, plus other errors, and not had issues. Some stay and some hurt, random beasts as I've never had a warning light.

5 dry sounds about right for coming on mind, although I see the motor specifies afterglow plugs, so perhaps not the usual warm to start only system, thus could trigger at different temp I guess.

i got that v140 code reader,  the car started up fine and ran as smooth as when temp was well over 2.5c as it was few days ago. just odd behaviour from the code reading systems

i have the other diagnostics you get from ebay on 5 cds that inpa and tis dis or whats it called  but i cant even fathom how to install it, so cant use that one.

can you buy a cd that simply self installs the programmes does anyone know.    this is like being a computer programmer but beyond my skills

Sounds like the glowplug controller is gone, loads of people have glowplugs gone or the glowplug controller faulty
And don't have starting issues, maybe a puff of smoke on startup.
I only changed mine on the X3 as it has a DPF and wo t regen if the glowplugs aren't working
The E53 doesn't have the DPF so not so much of an issue

ok  thanks for the info  will leave well alone i think, if it starts ok at 2.5c and runs then most of the winters we seem to get dont get much colder anyway and where we live on the coast its always milder than inland.

Yeah agree, if u haven't got an issue with the car starting then leave it alone. When it's bitterly cold mine starts but is ever so slightly lumpy for a second or two. Nothing to worry too much about tbh

I had a faulty control module for my glow-plugs...

The vehicle started fine all winter, but was a little lumpy on frosty mornings for about 15 seconds... then fine.

The replacement module gives a perfect run from the moment the engine started... but in all honesty, I think the £80 could have been spent else where on the vehicle.

As our colleague (previous) says... if it starts - Leave it alone, & put £100 in a jar toward some thing essential when it rears its head.
