Wheels & Tyres

Post by henrym3 » Fri Jul 21, 2017 8:31 pm

Decided to change tyres, they have done just over 24k the rear Continentals still had a bit of life left but had acquired 2 nails, the fronts Accelera had loads of life left but decided to do all 4. Needed the front wheels refurbed (back are like new)can't even blame anyone else for the kerb rash as I am the only driver. I have the son's 20" wheels on 7mm thread on rear across whole wheel with the inside edge almost showing canvas, the tyres have done 1500 miles and need binned. Yes, he has done the whole rear suspension.
Back to wheels, I have the M6 type wheels on with the double spoke and quite bright/chrome/silver type finish, I couldn't believe how difficult it is to find anywhere that can achieve that finish. No one would guarantee that finish and wanted to do all 4 to guarantee same finish. I was eventually given a company name by Rainbow paints so went to check it out. First impressions were good, a RR/Bentley/Bugatti/Ferrari/X6 parked outside, worried now about quote, but to my surprise he said colour was no problem and after looking at the wheels quoted £70 per wheel, nearly half the price of anyone else. It remains to be seen what they will look like. He couldn't do them till the 27th, so will report back after that.

Why don't you get them done in high gloss black, ( only joking ).
Will be interested to see what sort of job they do, that price seems very reasonable, are they stripping them right back before painting.

Took them in this morning and asked exactly what he was going to do, repair kerb rash, (one is particularly bad) and repaint, I had assumed at that price that it would then be a blow in paint job. I have expressed my concern that they obviously have to match the rears. He assured me they will. However I still am not confident enough to have the new rear tyres fitted until I see the results.

The reason for my post above was that my local paint shop will do wheels, ( standard size ), for £50 a corner, that's basically rubbing them back and spraying them.
I remember having a quote some time ago from a wheel specialist company in Cardiff, that was for the full blasting back to base metal, repairing any damage, priming and top coat, I seem to remember that being about £200 per wheel.
Forgot to add, when I had my z3mcoupe the original wheels on that were shadow chrome, now that's very nice.

My BMW Dealer - was Elms but now called summat else - had signs up quoting £85 a wheel.  They have their own BMW Approved Bodyshop on site to do the work.  That figure included any remedial work to the metal as well as refinishing.
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

You know, I'll admit the dealer never even crossed my mind. I do them a discredit.
