Alignment

Post by henrym3 » Thu Sep 21, 2017 8:14 pm

Got my new Conti's on now and booked in for an alignment on Saturday. Been doing some reading and am going to try and get the rear set to 1.5 neg camber and .05 toe to improve the 24k I got from the last set. The front I'm happy with having pulled the pin from the strut top which gave excellent wear, in fact they still had some life but I wanted to change them all at the same time. If I can't go in and watch/whinge then I'll go somewhere I can.

First time I've had the rear all in the green and really really surprised at the difference in feel it has made, feels so much more planted, thought it was good before but now it's a different vehicle, amazed how much difference 1 degree each side makes, well pleased.

What sort of price should the alignment cost out of interest?

Steertrak is a nationwide company who use mobile engineers and I think it's about £50, not bad when they come to you.

I cannot comment on the above company, and assume that you are not promoting them. I'd be genuinely surprised if there is mobile kit that is good enough to do four wheel drive alignment (which is not the same as normal 2 wheel drive alignment).

Cost vary from place to place quite a bit. A local tyre centre doest if for £30 front and £30 rear. they don't charge to check only if the alignment needs adjusted. Another place where I know the manager is around £120 for all four but thankfully he doesn't charge me that rate. I believe there are also Hunter and KDS machines, one or both of which are used by BMW and that is in the region of £300 (yes you read that correctly).

Some folk, who forum members say this is the only way to get the alignment done correctly. i wouldn't necessarily agree or disagree but I don't think you are likely tog et what you pay for. Personally I'd be wary of four wheel alignment done on my driveway for £50 but each to their own.

No I'm not promoting them, I asked my pal who has his own tyre place (part worns & new) if he could do the tracking on a transit pick up and he told me about Steertrak. We didn't use them as our mechanic gets it as close as he can by sight.

As I said earlier I payed 60 quid and travelled past 3 other places to go to a place with a reputation and a Hunter 4 wheel alignment machine. Realistically it's the bloke that does the alignment who has the reputation more so than the shop. BTW he spent 1hour 40mins to get to what I wanted, not just in the green

Cool, that gives me an idea, as I've just stuck on £800 worth of tyres on it seems silly not to really
