How scan tool

Post by Hairdye » Thu Dec 28, 2017 7:54 pm

Hi
This is my first post and would like to say hello.
I know there has been loads of discussions regarding the webasto heater in the x5 but I'm still stuck regarding aux heating and aux vents.
From what I have read and been told it can be programmed for aux heating using a bmw scan tool ,is this correct?
If it can ibe done is it easy to do it myself and which scan tool would I need to buy ?
If anyone has links or pictures as to what scan tool is required that would be great.
Many thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Firstly have you had the Webasco thermostat top heater burst into life when the ambient temperature is below 5 degs C?
Have you put 12v dc to pin 1 on the Webasco heater to make sure it's a runner ?
The Aux heater doesn't come fully integrated into the settings as it does in Euro spec cars as you seem to know.
BMW scanner 1.4.0 can activate the pre set  timer function. Not sure if Carly app can, I have Carly but didn't have it when I had my E53, so check their website under coding for E53.
Loads and loads of posts on this if you use the search button on this forum. Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I'm a bit confused as to whether it's working or not to be honest.
I used to hear a noise when I unlocked the car from the front passenger side. Nobody had any idea what it was when I asked but then found out it was the webasto heater (still didn't really understand) anyway it doesnt seem to make the noise when I unlock the car now .when the engines running the webasto is warm and so are the pipes that go to and from it.
How do I check if it's working ?
What is this with checking pin 1 and live ?
Sorry for sounding a bit thick but I am trying to figure  it out lol.
Any help you could give would be really aprecitated.
Many thanks

Put 12v +  Dc onto pin 1 on the multiply on the top of the Webasco heater, if it runs, you are getting smoke from the units exhaust under the passenger front seat area, the coolant temperature is rising when the engine is off, you can feel the flow/ pulsing of the coolant ( take the filler cap off the expansion tank too see.
Then it's working, so probably worth setting / coding the timer.
If not, Spring is not that far away

They normally only start once the engine is running and the air temp is below 5°C.  The obvious signs are a gentle ‘ticking’ from around the passenger seat and hot fumes coming out of the small exhaust below the front passenger side of the car.

Putting a 12V feed as suggested above will ‘prove’ the system is working.  The connector is where the wiring connects to the top of the unit itself.  Have a search on here to confirm which corner Pin #1 actually is - long thread about the system on here will tell you all you need to know.  If you take a connection from the jump start point under the bonnet and feed it to Pin 1 then that will kick the system into life regardless of engine/air temp.

#Horizon beat me to it.... :P :))

Jump start/ charging point 12v dc is usually on the bulkhead and has a black plastic cover to prevent shorting.
The cover can be lifted for access and may be marked with a + symbol..

Hairdye....I went down this path many moons ago.

This is what I found ....it's a quote from a trail I started during the summer

I dont have a scanner 1.4.0 but have another software suite which has SSS PROGMAN, INPA, EDIABAS, WINKFP, TOOLSET32, DIS / GTI, NAVCODER. For some reason, none of these seem to be able to crack the secrets of webasto and BMW.

What I have found out is, and i've not seen this mentioned nywhere, that there is a webasto c and a webasto z.

The "Z" is a supplymentary heater for the engine and the "C" is an auxillary heater for the car interior and windscreen defrost as well as the engine.

The difference being that the "C" has an additional pump added to the webasto "Z" unit.

So.....it seems even if there was some miraculous way of "switching the unit to auxillary heating" it would be no good a s there is no circulation pump on the unit to heat the cars interior heating circuit.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I tried pin 1 to live this morning and nothing happens at all . What's weird is I used to hear the noise from the passenger side all the time even in the early summer mornings. But now when it's cold it doesnt make any noise when unlocking the car.
Kanewesley does this mean it will never work if I have the webasto z ?
So I reckon this post has died if I can't progress any further but what would be the reasons for it not firing up from pin 1 ?
Many thanks
