Just a little brake pipe job, got a bit out of hand!

Post by sleepyfolk » Sat Feb 24, 2018 2:08 pm

So the idea was to replace a couple of rusty brake pipes front to back. Whilst we’re under there I thought well we might as well do a couple of other bits and pieces. This has now turned into:

1. Dropping the rear subframe and diff, and replacing all the steel brake lines from each wheel back to the ABS unit. New BMW brake fluid obviously which was due anyway.
2. Replace all the flexi brake pipes.
3. Fit new handbrake shoes, no wonder one wheel didn’t work, there were no shoes!
4. Change front diff oil and replace reinforcement plate bolts.
5. Change transfer box oil.
6. Change fuel filter.
7. Change rear diff oil, replace stub axle oil seals on diff, de-rust and re-paint diff before refitting.
8. Replace power steering reservoir, and suction and return lines, and pump to rack pipe assembly.
9. Replace front anti roll bar bushes, drop links, suspension arms, ball joints, track rod ends.
10. Flush cooling system and refilled with BMWs special unicorn tear antifreeze.
10. Spend £££s on various replacement driveshaft bolts, replacement clips and bolts to refit all the undertray and wheel arch gubbins back on as most of them were knackered or missing.

Not sure why I’m telling you all this, just for therapy I think and so you can all say it’s a good idea! Heeelp, my wallet and I have fallen out

At least you have been proactive and will have done a catalogue of little jobs that could add up to a problem if left.

Nice one sleepyfolk

Cracking job mate , way to do it if bits are off anyway. Might have damaged the wallet now but saved in the futures.

Diff and transfer case oils are on my list too., what year is yours as understand you have to reset something on mine via the OBD port. What’s that all about my shogun never had that !

By the way no amp or connection stuff in the boot for the radio - checked this morning- spot on mate.

Thanks again for the replies.

Cheers

Words of encouragement that’s what we need! Mines an 03 so no need for coding anything that I know of!

Hi

Blimey that spiralled a bit from the initial job, but it will save you in the long run from future problems, which are likely to occur.

And it's definitely now worth keeping for a while, as most cars that age won't have been that well looked after.

I would say a good job well well done.

I’m looking forward to when I can get the paint tidied up and the new stereo in, instead of all this stuff you can’t see!

Sleepyfolk

Nice job mate, front suspension is on my wish list - fancy at trip to God’s own county along with your four post ramp!

As your doing all my jobs list on your car already it will take you half the time to do mine :)

Like the red subframe- rebuilt a mini for my 30th birthday project did the subframes pillar box red- went twice as fast I swear ......

Will be starting the install of my mobile phone kit now the bl***y snows stopped- once that’s hopefully done on with my list of jobs - will be on for some tips from you.

Cheers

I’m quite lucky that some old school friends have a garage, so they let me tinker with some bits, but annoyingly they insist I pay them for the other stuff they do!
