PDC Again - I know but i need some help please

Post by ttr » Mon Apr 23, 2018 8:26 am

Eh up all!

Next project for me is fixing my PDC.

Symptoms are:-
Ignition on 2
Press P button and sometimes in stays lit no sound, sometimes is flashes and a beep is herd which then goes off.
Sensors do not appear to be working, but some do work intermittently at the rear, not so at the front???

Things I have checked:-

I can feel the pulse from one of the rear sensors when I put my finger over the sensor, cannot feel it on others.
I can HEAR the faint clicking on all the rear sensors though, albeit some are very faint.
Fronts I cannot determine as yet.

I have get access to the rear sensor and popped one out so in terms of replacing the sensors it appears relatively easy now I know which way to tug/pull/twist/lever the shroud off from the front and behind.

Questions:-

Mine is a facelift so I gather 6 of the 8 sensors are “straight” type and interchangeable and 2 are “L” shaped which fit on the front bumper corners – can anyone confirm this please?

Which sensors are best to buy on ebay , I have found a set of 4 straights for £45.00 or you can buy 4 for £27.00 – is there any difference or are they all Chinese imports ?

Would you buy all 8 sensors just to rule out this fault as I gather that the rear and front can be isolated, so I assume rear will work ok even if the front are faulty,  but you cannot isolate if 1 of the 4 fail at either front or back ?

I am doubtful it’s the actual PDC unit itself, which I understand is in the rear of the boot well somewhere.
Any tips or advice welcome, I do not have access to any OBD kit to read faults etc .

Cheers again

Have you tried a spray of contact cleaner in each plug.
Pull the plug of several times it will help to clean the pin's on the sensors.

Alan,

Morning, gave the one i got out yesterday a squirt of Elec Contact Cleaner and a pushed on/off a few times.

It looked clean and dry in fairness before i squirted anything in.

No difference made to any apparent audible sound or feel of the "pulse" through my finger tip.

Any advice welcome on this though - i cannot believe all the sensors have gone but by the time i pay for a diagnostic i might as well change the lot probably, even though i cannot really tell which one (s) are faulty.

Cheers for the advice - will try this route as well on the rest at the rear to start with

All

Well ordered 6 sensors on line from ebay having checked the part numbers on realoem.

Stripped of the front bumper first and had decided already to replace all the fronts whilst it was off, two were definatley not working anyway.

Bumper came off fine, but someone had taken it off in the past and broken the little plastic clip that sits on the underside of the wing where the plastic tabs press fit in the bumper. Accounts for why the bumper sits just out of line.! Managed to pry the other side out and wiggle the bumper of. Will no try and source the plastic clip and replace it , looks fairly easy to get at in fairness and i think its a press fit that clips in.

Replaced sensors and before re assembly checked everything on the front worked  - result.

Moved to rear and replaced the two faulty rears after figuring out how the little b$^^ers came off.

Checked the PDC button - light on no flashing and no sound  - Great result.

As a side point i could not hear the sensors clicking or feel them through my fingers so instead of electing to spend a fortune at the dealers  or souring a OBD scanning tool i tried a £2.20 pink stethoscope from Amazon - great piece of kit worked a dream could hear the clicking on all the good ones and able to spot the faulty ones.

Hope the above helps someone else.

My parking sensors hate the jet wash (not used by me I am a bucket & sponge man) and go on strike regularly so I fitted a rear camera and my daughter tells me they aren't needed as there is a thud if you get to close !!

Alan,

Like your listening tool  - i have a cocker spaniel - his ears are too droopy to use - but he can hear the treat box rattle at 500 yards !!!!!

Greydog

I have a wife that drives like that on occasions!!!!!!!!!!!
