Have BMW ever offered a flat paint finish?

Post by sapphireblack » Mon Jul 04, 2022 6:12 am

There's an X6/E71 I often see here in Zakynthos. It's a local car owned by a businessman. Its similar to Space Grey but has a dull flat finish, it could be wrapped of course, I've never seen it with a door open and can hardly ask who I think the owner is to oblige me.

Idle curiosity, no more 🤔

Doesn't answer your question, but when I was in Ukraine in '18 there were loads of cars and vans of different makes with matt/satin finishes. Certainly more than I've ever seen in the UK. Maybe it's a regional thing. :?

‘Frozen’ (their name) finish is now available on a lot of BMWs. It wasn’t way back when but is fashionable today. My local dealer (with a specialist BMW Bodyshop attached) also applies a ‘spray-on, peel-off’ paint or a wrap as options.

The catch is you must not apply polish to the car - EVER. It destroys the finish.

On our (hopefully) incoming i4, frozen paint was a £2k option. We left it off.

Coincidentally I saw a new model X6 this afternoom. German registered in a lime green/yellow matt finish. Stunning, but not a car for an old man like me.

The E71 sits lower and has a wider backend than any of the current models. I may be biased but I prefer that version to the later models.

I like a wide flat bottom  :o I admit to bias too.

On the subject of colours, they are of course subjective, but I read only today, black, white, grey are consistently the most popular choices on new builds.🤔

Long time, a very long time in fact since I bought two new Alfas for my ex. She chose those colours. Buying pre-owned which is my preference is obviously more limiting, after many years with a black E53 another option was desired. Space Grey with a nice spec and trim fitted the bill, and so I bought it ☺
