The actual spannering should be very fast on drivers only airbag , the coding after could certainly and probably will take ages , why they wouldn't do the 2 together in this case and get one coding I dunno

Well, it's been done today. Allegedly it doesn't need a new airbag. After the EGR cooler debacle (two visits, both telling me the cooler didn't need to be replaced, and then a third recall when the cooler did need to be replaced) I'm not confident.

I hadn't even got home when they 'phoned to say the car was ready to collect and telling me it needs the tyres replaced because they're not approved.
Half an hour after that, another call to say that both headlamp level sensors need to be replaced (haven't looked at them myself, so not sure yet) and a steering rack end needs to be replaced (both were new before the MOT at the beginning of November!).
I really have no faith in all this "value added" malarky.

Dont we all hate the adding value BS. Did they even look at the steering rack ends before condemning them? If both were new two month's ago i imagine they still look new after just two months' use.

Had the Air Bag recall and like you got a phone call telling Recall Work done but they considered the car unsafe to drive ?? Asked why they told me it was fitted with non standard bushes which could fail at any time Bushes and subframe bushes are PTFE. Many miles later and they haven't fallen off

The dealership concerned didn’t happen to be Bristol Street motors or Vertu by any chance as has two similar calls after my daughters Skoda went in for routine servicing, I just avoid them at all cost now

Yes, Vertu. To be honest, I use them because they're convenient. Maybe next time I'll take it to Lloyd Newcastle.

I can't help thinking that even if the steering wheel airbag is OK, it won't be long before there is a recall on the passenger side one - and that's going to mean having the dashboard out.

Sodding airbags are more trouble than they're worth.

I’ve used Lloyds in Colne even though I live in Derbyshire and have used them and continue to do, since I bought the x5 in 2018, always found the service to be very good, having said that had a couple of issues, both were sorted very quickly and professionally at minimum incontinence to me.

If you are unsure that your car has been done, then get in touch with BMW. There’s been another incident in France where a female driving a 2014 Citröen ‘kissed’ the crash barrier and triggered the steering wheel airbag. Sadly she suffered a fatal brain injury due to shrapnel in her head. The owner had not received a recall letter.

These airbags are still causing problems. If in doubt, check with a dealership. This should apply to anyone thinking of buying a used BMW from the period up to 2015.

DVLA still provides a recall notice i think? Probably easier and quicker than talking to a main dealer initiallly. From my limited contact with franchised dealers, whilst some are very helpful, many of the regular staff know very little about the product they sell.

All my notices have come from BMW UK or a text/call from my dealers. The Service Dept check using the key.

Strangely, i didnt ever get any notice from BMW regarding my E71, i think i read it here first. Last night out of curiosity, i checked with the DVLA, the E71 is not showing any recalls outstanding . But the E70 does. Perhaps still too soon to have been updated via the dealer and BMW?

I think a big part of the problem is the loss of owner records with used cars. I suspect BMW (and others) only hold data on the original owner and once that changes then things go missing. It’s either poor record keeping or they aren’t checking with DVLA databases.

I had a recall notice for my 2-series more than a year after I gave it back…..to BMW! Had to tell them I wasn’t the current keeper and the car had been sold on….by a BMW Dealership!

Škoda UK did the same after I sold my Superb…..back to Škoda. I had one 6 months back, and the car wasn’t mine after May 2018!!

I would have expected far better records management by all parties. Some of the issue is (I think) that DVLA won’t be involved if it is classed as a ‘Quality Update’ meaning it isn’t a safety recall within a notifiable campaign.

In any event, it doesn’t seem to work very well, and with lives at stake could do with being a lot better.
