E70 3.0D cutting out

Post by Leslie » Tue Jun 17, 2025 8:23 pm

Well got a similar issue today in my SD, round the roundabout and mine went with a bump into neutral and glided to a half luckily there was a little space on the dual carriagaeway to pull in . Pushed the start button it spun over but didn't fire , left it a minute and took key out and back in and we are away again.
Got home and put foxwell 530 scantool on and we have many codes ( a lot of which I know off but care not for  ) but injector 5 activation stands out . To make matters worse I remembered I had millars diesel sport fuel additive in the boot so threw 50 ml in but guess what . It wasn't :fuelfire: It was Millars vspe ethanol lead fuel treatment for classic cars which has an identical bottle that I brought back for my xr2 :headbang: I then went and got £20 of diesel and drove it on , did 130 miles and its been fine so far but I suspect the cat wont be keen on it .
One of those days in too big a hurry .
I was able to check the injector smooth running after and they are all mint all close to zero so its more an electrical issue possible due to it sitting a month on a steep sloping drive nose up and water has been getting in the injectors which they are famous for . After only just paying £430 in ved I feel a bit miffed as I only put it back on the road as the Passat failed mot

Ooops, Seems familiar just like the problem I had earlier this year, if it is then the cutout will get more frequent as the injector piezo fails when it does no start at all. Replacement injector time

Well greydog you were right went to take it down for a pre mot inspection this morn got about 10 miles and it ground to a halt ,got another 2 miles same , sent down a very windy narrow diversion with no passing room and it stopped about 8 times in 2 miles , was proper sweating incase I blocked the road , got about 10 yards only on 1 start lol. Its abandoned at my dads for now until I decide what to do, couldnt go anywhere even if I wanted to lol. code 4450 injector 5 activation. That ecsalated quickly literally the next run out as I havent used it since :headbang:

Oh Ohh hope that wasn't me putting the mockers on it
Still it isn't a bad DIY job if you have a decent slide hammer to pull injector 5 or an Injector removal tool. To adapt my slide hammer I welded an old wheel nut M14 (ft fits the injector top) to an M12 nut to screw onto the slide hammer shaft. I changed all 6 and the Glow plugs and controller while in there. An old friend (used to be a Diesel Mechanic) and worked for Range Rover thought that was overkill he would have changed just the faulty one
Still the old girl is running really well apart from the Parking Brake has decided to misbehave some days I love my X5 and others still at least I am still able to do 90% myself

I was fairly sure the fault would be back soon so you haven't jinked it lol
Got an injector slide hammer ordered ,was cheap at 12 quid , my mechanic is sick with a damaged neck vertabrae and can't do it , sent me too another guy he has no help as his helper is either sick or has left and 40 cars in the street so can't take it on either, new injector ordered 300 quid and a set of inlet gaskets . I'm not touching the heater plugs though may actually meter them to see how many are duds . The 2nd mechanic did say you will probably have another one fail soon , he said recon ones are cheap but I said its the electronics go so recon is a waste of time as this can't be repaired.
May have to adapt the slide hammer if it isn't man enough but will try first , can see a rusty stain in the plastic on top of the engine at the back , the corner pieces are not broken and I had replaced one before with a new one but its leaking in where they join at the centre past the little foam seal on the left side but really this water should just run off but there is a recess maybe its bolted on and water may have got in there.
TBH I started using the x5 a lot less after suffering some financial pain with it a few years ago plus fuel prices went silly when I could least afford it , have been using it again and its great to drive , brilliant in traffic with the auto but when it goes wrong its expensive plus its not worth much now , if it needed say 3 injectors plus 430 tax that's 1500 quid probably half its value now so id be better scrapping it
