What oil?

Post by tractorjacob » Wed Apr 13, 2011 2:03 pm

Hi, after a recent success fixing my motorbike I have decided to take the highly ambitious step of changing my air filter, oil breather, oil filter and oil on my 2004 E53 3.0d.

I picked up the service parts this morning from my BMW dealer and almost passed out when he told me he could supply the oil for £137 :o
Surprisingly I opted to get it elsewhere.
I was told I needed 05W 30 oil and he recommended either Castrol of Mobil 1.
I was just wondering if anyone knows if the Halfords 05W 30 fully synthetic oil would do as well or am I best sticking to the recommended brands?
Also online I found the Castrol edge oil for about £45 for 5 L but there’s also the Castrol magnitex oil, still fully synthetic and 05W 30 but much cheaper. Could I use this??

Cheers for any help or info because I really don’t know much about oils!

Dave

Hi,

National Tyre will do oil change for under £70 using Castrol edge and 8 litres. I cant buy it for that and they will do it. seems like a no brainer to me however nearest one to me is 60 miles away. Has anybody used them and what did you think?. Some things are too good to be true, Is this one ?.

Went to halfords and found the castrol edge for £45 for 4 litres. Had a small brainwave and used the 'red lazer' app on my phone. Quick zap of the bar code told me the cheapest place locally to buy it was ASDA at £30 for 4l!
So ended up with 8 litres for £60. Pretty chuffed with that, nearly £80 cheaper then the dealer!

Also if it wasn't for all the help and great write ups on this site I wouldn't even hav thought about trying this so a big thanks to you lot!

Absolutely brilliant........in particular the "red lazer" app ending.

Wise folk pop in here whilst others get their pockets felt elsewhere.

Thanks for sharing :)

Weren't National Tyre doing half price oil changes (I'm sure I read it on here somewhere!)?
My indy charges £70 for the fully synthetic oil for my X5.

Been down the national tyres route twice and paid around 35 quid. No problems at all but mentioned it on here on different topic and suddenly felt like a cheapskate cause it seemed others would rather pay more to get dirty and do it themselves rather than let anyone other than am indy or dealer touch their car! Glad someone else has had a good experience of this bargain.

Have to say my experience of dealers (previous motor not BMW) is not great so don't think the young lads there are any better than those in national.

Kwik Fit too, £44.95 for a an oil service with Mobil 1 - CLICK. I need to get mine booked in. With the amount of oil the V8 takes, it's got to be a no-brainer !
