Interior led feedback

Post by nujon » Tue May 24, 2011 8:00 pm

Anyone any recent feedback on fitting and use of interior leds ? - including:-

- recommended no. of led elements per lamp (eg. 4 single plane leds vs 4 x 4 plane (360 deg) units)
- endurance (absolute life and retained brightness)
- power consumption vs. standard tungsten (flat battery risk)
- heat output (melt-damage risk)
- ease of fitting - straight swap vs. mods
- recommended suppliers (info by PM as appropriate)

Thanks

Can't answer all of the OP's questions but I have been getting my LED bulbs from turbowilko!

He's sent some through the post to complete my interior (just not here yet).

You need 4 for each door, 4 for the foot wells - these 8 are all the same.

Then you have the one's in the upper boot lid - different from all the others. And the 2 in the cabin overhead (front and rear) - still need to check these.

All are easy to fit, the barrel one's in the doors and foot wells need to be placed the right way round in mine! Did my head in for a while! Work, not working, etc!

You can extend to the exterior reg plate one's and the puddle lights in the door mirrors.

All the light is whiter but doesn't have the same glow at night, just sharper. None of them will melt anything, they are cold to the touch - the whole reason for changing mine. Less power consumption, less heat - better battery life. In an E53 you have quite a few lights that come on EVERY time those doors are unlocked...

Yeah I don't count them - they never come on automatically. But still TOO many!!!

No idea on number of elements and endurance though - but I hear they last so much longer.

More elements the brighter I suppose but you will use more power, perhaps????

Is it just me or are there no pics to see? <!-- s:| -->:|<!-- s:| -->

I have uploaded what came through the post today.

4 barrel bulbs for the doors
2 bootlid ones
2 overhead ones - you'll need to make the hole in the reflective plastic a bit bigger, easy to do once you get it out

Wilko, could you and your mate put together a kit covering all the interior lights and rear plate lights and do an all in p&p price for us who are interested? You can pm if you prefer.

Cheers

These bulbs fit in the overhead lights and you dont have to make the hole bigger they are bright too. Got to get some for the map lights next :D

I swapped out all the interior bulbs in my E39 for white LEDs. As Sanj said they run pretty much stone cold and take a lot less power (about 1/10th).

After a month or so I found that the white light was too harsh. So I swapped them for 'Warm White' LED bulbs from http://www.ultraleds.co.uk. These are much more expensive than the common white LED's, but the colour of the light output is similar to the stock filament bulb, they take a little more power (about 1/6th of the originals) and have circitry in them so you can plug them in either way round. They are also brighter if you go for the versions with 6 LEDs.
