CTEK 7000

Post by Raj » Tue Jun 07, 2011 7:58 am

Hi all,

very quick one really.

Can the 7000 be used as an engine starter on the rare occasion that the X could not be started due to a flat battery?

Thanks,

Raj

I very much doubt it as it would need to be capable of delivering a very large starting current - possibly a burst of several hundred Amps. The unit is only charge rated to about 7A I think, and I don't remember seeing anything about a 'burst' mode to allow starting of something, especially if it's as big as an X.

Ok that's cool as it didn't appear to be able to from what I had read, so was just wondering. Am looking to pick a charger up and my cousin has just bought a Clarke BC120N which he said seems to be a good piece of kit so was just comparing.

I've got decent jump leads etc if it came to it so may still go with the ctek.

I have a starter pack (i.e. portably battery), and there is no way it can start an X5 either. It would not even start my previous 3.0 Z before I had the CTEK chargers on them.

They work on small engines (Golf 1.8 fine), but the capacity required to jump start an X5 is way beyond the normal (afforable) range.

Ordered one and should arrive tomorrow.

Since getting the X back it's a slight struggle to start each morning so just need to recondition/charge the battery to bring it back to life.
