right i have this all the time with my mates, i always run budget tyres and find them perfect, if you look at tyre reviews alot of high end tyres score low in tests and the x5 is 4x4 so you have extra grip anyway so i got tyres 1 month ago 315/35/20-dellente £100 each, branded £364 each saving me £528 a bad driver blames his tyres!! no probs with them so far and done 2500miles on them. also my 22s have 285 35 22 x sport autogrip on and these are excellent winter tyres with enormous tread on, each to there own but all tyre have to meet safety standeards and theres no such a thing as cheap re moulded crap these days n e more so why not save £500 per axle?
i wasnt saying all buget tyres are good because they arnt, just saying that some are and until tried you dont know, however the 22" tyres in that brand are so good ive lept my 22s for winter they have 15mm of tread and are like tractor tyres, where i live when it snows it snows and last year my other x5 came home one night in 12" of snow, you couldnt even see the road i had to drive near the hedge on right so i knew where the road was and we have mega hills round here 1 in 3s etc everywhere the x5 got up them all!

I hadn't taken your comments that way at all honest :D

In the conditions you describe, you're braver than I would have been and the tyres more than met what you needed.

Probably find that the X5 is pretty good off-road too with a decent block tread pattern :driving:

Personally I would like set of 18's running Mud Terrains.....I also like the reviews of the Genearal Grabber AT2....shame they stopped making these. There are of course always normal General Grabbers or Toyo Open Country.

I know our cars don't have locking diff's or low ratios but it would be nice to have a play in mild off road terrain once in a while.

Rather sadly & quite recently I have found myself looking at parked up 4x4's in car parks & inspecting tread patterns & sidewalls for details. I particularly find myself casually doing this on cars covered in mud. Muddy X5's on rare rubber are of particular interest.

So far I have been managing managed to not do this when someone is with me......

Hmm  .......I need to keep tabs on this or I may need some special help :)

Do you think I should consider buying winter rubber now?

As my first offroader I have never considered winter tyres, but as I live in a small village, the roads don't get gritted and can be a challenge!

Does winter rubber affect fuel economy much and affect comfort, noise etc?

Has anyone had experience in the snow with normal all weather tyres such as Bridgestones or Michelins?

Saw these on ebay and grabbed them for £300

As long as the tyres are legal I can buy a few months from them and they are Michelin so not budget brand.

Did fancy the upgrade to 20's as well. Hopefully they will look the business when on.
