CV gaiter split

Post by Pewters » Thu Sep 15, 2011 9:44 pm

Looking at those prices AW8 I'm so glad I can do lots myself.

As for easy level, it is quite a bit harder than pads/discs but I suppose it depends how compliant you are.

I have used Alan before & should probably have used him more........Top & trusted guy - proper old school.

It was Alan that fitted BMW balljoint on the Z3, (shortly after an all makes mechanic bodge fitted & damaged one shortly before).

No courtesy cars & has a busy diary.........but makes up for this in skill, experience & fairness.

just to add to the pot, my local indy cost me £240 inc parts, labour and VAT for both sides.... reasonable I think for an ex master tech and compared to my local Stealer who wanted £600+ !!!!!!!

I have just had a Labour quote for £110+ vat from M's BM's by welling high Street.

funny enough I had a look at the paper work on my last Dealer Inpection and a replacement was adviced at £569 excluding VAT!

Myn were £4.49 per side!:-D What id do if I were paying for the job I would buy 2 new complete driveshafts £86pair brand new 2yr warantee, get them fitted and its faster to change the shaft than the boot so save on labor cost, that way u do all four boots and the cv joints in 1 hit! How would u feel if u pay £100-£600 for boots then 2months later the cv joint starts to knock!

2.5 yrs ago when i took my car to the dealers for an inspection they listed some items as needing fixing at some point.
They listed a few other things which I had them fix but they were a little bit of a thief listing quite a lot on the "need to fix" bill ...!
They even listed Screen washer tank cap as needing replacement because the halford one was not from BMW!

Anyway they listed Nearside & Offside Front tension struts - perishing & excess movement

Strange thing is I have gone through another inspection via another BMW dealership & MOT tests with other local garages and non have hightligted the suspension thingy.

should I believe over eager dealer that spotted it or is it that the others did not check?

please caould you let me know the work of the cv joints , driveshaft on a vehicle is what what symptoms can be observed from their failures
what are the causes of split gaiters other than natural perishing of rubber?
I wanted to have an Idea what other jobs need to be considered /checked before work is carried out on the car

cheers

oh bugger i wrote a long reply and lost it, basically split boots lead to early joint failure, how ever shafts are that cheap its hardly worth doing the boots labour will cost same, you would know if one has gone they bang and knock, my other eply was detailed bt i cant be bothered to re type

Annoying when that happens.......I can't prevent internet connection failures but cut & pasting before submission can save frustration - ensuring "log on each visit" or whatever it says is selected on the forums.

I have recently had both front gaitors changed and rear discs and pads done at the same same time - total cost was £330 at my Indy.

Had my CV gaiters replaced last weekend as they were showing signs of wear (cracks between the grooves). Normally i do
repairs myself but an indy quoted me only £60 labour to do both sides. I bought genuine BMW CV gaiters and
it took about 3 hrs.

On a side note item 6 in the above link were also showing signs of wear ( cracks in the rubber ) . knowing the indy would
most likely remove the 21mm nut and bolt to assist in removing the CV joint, i went and bought 2 tension struts from
GSF ( Febi Bilstein ) and got them to open the ball joint on the opposite end and replaced both tension struts at the same time
for an extra £20 labour . Total cost £80, happy days.

I was offered a courtesy car but decided to stay with my car and perhaps offer some input to work being
carried out , needless to say no input required as these guys knew exactly what to do.

Not seen £20 per hour labour down this neck of the woods for a while.

Glad all sorted :)
