Performance Tuning Chip Box
This guy has sold 958 of these and has 100% feedback, most claiming they work in their feedback http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/260858173017? ... 3D1&_rdc=1
How do these compare to a remap?

Performance Tuning Chip Box
Performance will be very simlar, the main difference been that the box will kick out a shed load of black smoke, a remap will not.
I have fitted these to many cars and yes they work, and work very well.
Pros and cons of both
Fitted to
laguna many yrs ago
Vectra (mates) been on 3 yrs
320d (mi bros) fitted at 155k still going strong at 250k with only a burst rubber intake pipe I think.
Fitted to a few more with no probs, I have only posted to give my personal experience with the tuning box, when I had my 530d I was going to go down the remap route, just for peace of mind.
Yes I have fitted to a few cars and are still on, but a remap is custom so should be better long term.

Re: Performance Tuning Chip Box
Not a remap or tuning expert but my two penneth fwiw.
IMO choosing a remap over a tuning box will not guarantte imunity from additional clouds from the rear.
Maps can vary as can tuning boxes.
One thing to consider is whether a stealth fitment is required.
If you fit a tuning box & later due to a claim an insurance assessor later sees it you may find your insurer won't settle or worse still will declare your insurance void at time of the accident. This would be likely to involve other issues from a legal prospective.
Sure some might be able to remove a tuning box after the collision but there could be consequences of this &/or issues in event you or the car are not in a position post collision to allow for the unit to be removed prior to an insurance assessor inspection.
Of course the text book advice is all modifications should be declared, (visible or not),unless insurer states otherwise.
If proposed new legislation placing restrictions on modifications comes in then motorists with mods can potentially expect all kinds of legal grief.
Much of above hypothetical & worst case scenario stuff but in the main so as to allow an informed choice re tuning boxes.
On a final note some have alleged the gearbox on prefacelift 3.0d E53 can be vulnerable to the extra load from engine tuning.........I must add that I have absolutely no idea as to whether this is correct albeit I have no information to suggest the info is wrong.

Insurance inspectors are actively checking for undeclared remaps, despite what many tuners claim, a map is far from invisible.

Re: Performance Tuning Chip Box
To be fair i just want mine to pull a bit better from a standing start and also change gear quicker, also better mpg, i am concerned about the gearbox issue now that you have mentioned it.....anyone throw any light on this?

But what if it was mapped before you took ownership? You wouldn't be aware
Performance Tuning Chip Box
As far as I have been informed, there are two types of tuning box available for most diesels.
1) the output from the high pressure fuel line sensor is altered so that the engine management believes there to be less fuel pressure than there actually is, so it increases the pressure from the pump to correct this, therefore more fuel is injected as it is at a higher pressure.
This can damage the pump as it is having to work harder, also the injectors wear more quickly.
2) the throttle position sensor output is modified so the engine management thinks you are accelerating harder so giving engine mire beans all the time.
A proper remap will modify the way the engine is controlled including turbo pressure and injection length.
Ask Jason for a better answer.

I believe ignorence is not a defence, albeit mitigation could be offered, (in genuine cases). No idea if dates of remaps are detectable - probably wise not to over discuss such issues openly here.
back to box versus remap comparisons...Rusty gives good advice & I would advise anyone in doubt to speak to a reputable re-mapping expert. Jason can be PM'd via this site or like other remappers he can be called or emailed with queries.

To get extra power from a diesel engine you will need to add more fuel you then need to add a bit more air as boost to remove any smoke
A diesel tuning box will add more fuel by raising the pump pressure(rail pressure), by having higher fuel pressure this will allow more fuel to pass through the injectors for the same injector opening time thus more fuel injected more power, but you can only get an extra 20-25 bhp by adding fuel till the engine starts to smoke
The ecu's software has map tables, limiter map tables and singel byte safety limiters for torque boost, fuel pressure and so on which the engine runs on
Diesel Boxes are like piggy back ecu's they change the info going to the sensors ie in this case to raise the fuel pressure(rail pressure) to give a higher pressure but the ecu still see's the normal values, this can easily over ride the the safety limiters that are built in to the ecu and also put the components under much more stress ie in this case pump, injectors and so on
When you remap a car you have a lot more you can do and a lot more power to be gained
Here is a small example, you can change the injector timing so the injectors open for longer, raise the fuel pressure to with in a safe limit, add a bit more boost to help added fuel to reduce smoke, change gear limiters, torque limiters, throttle pedal against torque, lamda request and alot more to give better throttle response, wider torque range, improved mpg, less lag, smoother gear changes
