Philips diamond Vision will fit or if keen to get UK road legal bulbs then there are the new Osram Nightbreaker Plus bulbs which come in about £10 cheaper per pair typically & have were recent winners in the test of street legal uk market bulbs.

Re the Diamond Vision - Nobody is likely to get your fog bulbs out to check for an "E" mark though. I also note since my last post they are only 55w so hopefully no issues with wiring & heat.

For visibility 4300k is regarded as the closest to natural daylight & best visibility.

might look at them,had hids in my other x5 but carnt be arsed with wires etc just want plug in and go, oem zenon look. can i fit them in all front lights and fogs?

bar drilling a hole in the lamp backplate and bolting the ballasts to the wings it was plug and play for me....very easy and no splicing or messing

i thought the halogens with 55W would produce more heat than 55W HID. also both halogen and any HID kits draw from the alternator supposed to be the same. it is the ballast and the gas filled bulb that makes the HID brighter. i don't think that getting either 55 or 75W kit is going to make too much of a difference on the heat or draw.every kit that i installed on my vehicles as well as my friends vehicles were plug and play. the only difference on the BMWs as well as any vehicle that has the bulb out warning, you just have to plug an adapter to cancel out the error message if you are converting from halogen to HID that is.. since the HID doesn't have a filament like the the halogens to return a resistance to kind a say i am a complete circuit till that filament breaks and it becomes open circuit that's when you get the warning on the dash saying your light is out. so they basicly use a resistor to give the same reading to the LKM this way it doesn't think that the circuit is open..same for the LEDs. i am sure there are more people in the forum with a lot more experience in the HID world but this was what i got from the research i've done before starting to switch to HIDs.

as far as installation it was pretty much a plug and play. you should have a space for the ballast to fit underneath the headlight assembly .that;s where by ballast is located and the ones that i am looking to get is a slim ballast kit so it will be easier to slide them into that slot made for the ballast. on the cars that i installed hids i just used double sided tape. never had an issue...

i would not worry about changing the main beams to HID because you will have enough light output from the HIDs on the DIP beam that the only time you'll need to use your main beams is to let people know to move over or say thank you ..since it takes a couple seconds for the light to get brighter it would not do any good for you to have them on main beams. but from my personal experience on the 540i i had the fog light with HID came in very handy in 2009 winter .when i had the dip beam and fog light on it just looked like daylight outside...so i think the dip beam and fog should do the trick for extra light needs..

If talking upgrade bulbs then yes- but check on the link I gave enetering your car info to check sizes/types.........Some bulbs only come in certain sizes - you can look elsewhere such as ebay &/or other suppliers for best prices.

i think that oem halogen bulb option is H7 which might need a bulb adapter to keep it in place. i've done a HID upgrade on one of friends 03 plate 3.0d X5 and it took me forever to figure out and get that adapter to keep the stupid bulb secure.
since i changed my headlight units to angel light one i think i should sell my oem hid headlight units..
i am going to try to go thru my garage next week and see what i have that i won't need anymore
so far i know the headlight assemblies and OEM SAT-NAV unit which i replaced with hauligan...

I cannot agree with NOT changing main beam to xenon, was one of the best mods I have done, going across the Salisbury Plain at 3 in the morning with all lights on, like ''daylight at night''.
Yes, they take a few seconds to warm up, so what!!

what tempeture bulbs did you use ?4300K or 6000K?

One thing to be mindful of when using HID bulbs in main beam lamps is that the bulbs do not like repeated 'Hot starts' and this reduces their operating lives considerably. A standard dip/main hid lamp uses a mechanical shutter to obstruct the bulb tip in the 'dip' mode which moves out of the way when 'main beam' mode is selected.

Think about the projectors we use at work. They use a similar technology and there is a recycle time from on to off to on again. This is mainly to stop premature failures. Car HID bulbs should give around 3,000 (some more) hours of use before the lamp starts to fail, but if repeated hot starts are used, that can drop by 50%.

The X6 has a HID main, but it's built into the standard healight, and not an additional unit. They may look as if they have dual lights either side, but the inner one has up until the 2011 model year been a dummy to hold the H8 angel eye bulb. Whether next year's LCI version will go to twin with one or both being LED isn't yet clear. I hope they do, because the X6 lighting isn't anything like as good as the E53's in my view. I do miss having the long range spotlights of the E53.

In days of old I had a Mk1 Cavalier with 85/100W main, 100w inboard Hella Spotlamps and 100W Hella fogs (I was 25 alright!) and they really could light up the road - and quite possibly damage oncoming retinas at 250 yds too . It used to make the old alternator charge/voltmeter kick whenever all 6 were selected.

Shocking memories now flooding back of my '79 Mk 1 1256cc Cavalier with 100w Ring Rally Giants in the 80's. My excuse is I was only 18 & the car cost me a family discounted £300 !

placed an order for 2 sets of 75W kits 4300K tempeture one for the dip beam and one for the fog lights. total cost for 2 kits delivered was $185 which is about 120 quid i think. we'll see how they will turn out.i am hoping for a good difference

have changed dip and main to 6000k,I don't worry too much about the life of the bulbs, they are very cheap on ebay.
