I had the same issue with my X5. It failed on the way home from buying the car back in 2009. !

This was the X5 within 5 minutes of me arriving home with it.

I've posted on this elsewhere on the forum, but I'm convinced that the salt put on the roads in winter is often to blame. Councils are under increasing pressure to put as much down as possible. Combine that with sub-zero temperatures and no rain to wash it away, saline solution can sit in the wheelarch area for weeks.
I always try to give the car a weekly washdown and spray underneath in winter from the hose. Less bothered about how the paint looks and more concerned with getting rid of the salt.
