gearbox downchange
gearbox downchange
is the gearbox downchanging lwhen breaking linked to the pedel travel, as i currently have alot of brake pedal travel as ive not got it sorted yet, its quite hilly where i live an yesterday i was braking from 55 to say 30 behind a car an i went down 4 gears and was revving is arse off at bout 4k? it strange tis as if im in manual or dsc off its fine, my dads disco 4 doesnot do this? is there a way to do what ever turning the dsc off does to the gearbox but whilest leaving the dsc on, then its a dream, however this issue has only arrived with the pedal travel which im hoping to get done soon as before this would have only gone down gears exsesively on very steep 1 in 3 hills, thanks

Re: gearbox downchange
I only ever saw this on if I held on the brakes gently (say 5 seconds or so) for a while going downhill to bring the speed down to around 30mph and the transmission would then maybe drop a couple of gears to hold a 30mph set speed - no cruise control in use. It cleared as soon as I touched the throttle though. It always did it come out of Cranfield in Beds as the last part of the 30mph zone towards Bedford has a steep downhill section. The function only engaged if I 'trailed' the brakes. A quick stab on them did nothing except drop the speed. I don't think it's to do with travel, just how long you stay on the brakes.
What happens if you just gently touch the throttle again? If the car then almost 'freewheels' then maybe there is a connection for when going down steeper gradients. I've seen something about this somewhere, but can't for the life of me remember where. Earlier generation automatics always had an advisory to select D3 or D2 when going downhill as a way of preventing 'runaway' due to less engine braking on autos. We're talking late 1970's, early 1980's here when I was learning to drive.

Re: gearbox downchange
well i was just wondering, ive not had my brakes done yet as im getting goodrich braided hoses fitted and their being made to order and have not turned up yet, i supose i was holding them down a while beahind a bus but 4 gears was a little extreme must have gone into 2nd from 6th, yes when i accellerated it went straight up again, i dont think i have any issue but tbh when the traction control is off it drives perfect like the landrover one its just anoying on some roads having to change to manual or turn off dsc!
