Front and rear pads needed soon

Post by davyk31 » Thu Dec 01, 2011 8:10 pm

My E70 35d is showing front pads needed in 2100 miles and rear in 3000 miles. Car has done 33k miles.

Just wondering what size of bill to expect and what options there are? Most BMW seem to need disks very early, will this also need disk or how can I check my dealer isn't wanting to do work I don't really need. Is it also likely to need rear disks?

What make of pads/disks do X5 use as standard, is it an easy DIY job and if so how do I reset the Idrive notification.

Front and rear pads needed soon

Post by b21playa » Tue Dec 06, 2011 6:01 am

Hi

Looking at realoem it states galfer as the original manufacturer. Never heard of them.

In all my bmws I've always used pagid or textar, both from Eurocarparts, and then fitted myself. I don't think resetting the I drive was hard, I'm sure there is a guide on the forum.

Ecp also had 25% off So worth considering

On the E53 the BMW pads claimed by others to be badged versions of pads made by Jurid & Textar. I would use Brembo discs on my E53 but dont know who makes what on the E70.

Regardless of the website listings, if you email or call Danny at [url=http] bmw parts online [/url[ he should be able to help you he has been helpful to me and others before.Personally I would use Danny as I speak with the same guy who does the stock ordering & he seems to care about customers. I am not associated with him or his company & I dont have any discount arrangement for mentioning him here either !

EuroCarparts should be able to help as should Motormec. There is a discount code for ECP which you should be able to find with some searching on this or other bmw related forums. Maybe worth a price from GSF also. Don't buy cheap quality pads whatever you do.

Discs no idea who makes yours for BMW but try nextday brakes dot com for Brembo prices if needed.

bmw have set charge for front discs and pads for £245

total £464 based on 6 cyl, all fitted main dealer

euro ate pads £65, f,,, r £51
pagid discs f £112 r £74, then indicators £52

so total about £354 based on 2005 x5

just some ball park prices,

Front and rear pads needed soon

Post by b21playa » Tue Dec 06, 2011 12:50 pm

Alot of this depends on if you can DIY.

Had a look on Ecp and prices as follows:
Front disc £104 x 2 each
Rear disc: £50 x 2 each
Front pads : £74
Rear pads: £51
Sensors: £18 x 2 each

Total: £466, £350 after winter discount

The above is based on an e70 3.0d

I hope this helps

Stay away from pagid brakes 8 out of 10 customers we have come to us asking us to check why the have brake squeal have pagid fitted
We tried them for two weeks and ended up changing all the ones we fitted for what we normally used jurid or textar
The pagid dealer told us there was a know problem with them sqealing on BMW cars

Shouldn't be a problem of fitted properly although personally not sure what is wrong with standard ones really

The problem with the genuine BMW stamped discs is the price.

I see no point paying more if I can source kit similar to OE without a BMW logo & for a lot less.

That said buying poor or incompatable items is not a wise move IMO.

Yeah, there's nothing quite like Rubbah Discs and Spungi Pads for a bit of excitement whilst stopping

Probably true although pagids are expensive (for the lotus anyway)

What is the minimum thickness that disks can go down to and what thickness are the new ones. Would like to check the thicknesses myself and not just trust the dealers.

THINK only - 3mm minimum when sensor kicks off. With a wear groove that gets more audible as it goes down. And think 8mm when new, may be more. Getting some Thursday and can check for you then?

I'm thinking he's meaning total wear from both sides of the disc, you have left side vent and right side.

You start around 28mm this would mean 8mm plus 8mm and 12mm vent. So min disc based on above would be 25mm, the min thickness should be stamped on the disc though.
