DRL's

Post by sapphireblack » Tue Dec 13, 2011 10:35 am

Now i may seem an old tart/fart to some of the younger guys here but i'm not beyond what i consider sensible and worthy upgrades and mods.

I like the idea of the additional safety afforded by DRL's and can visually picture some mounted in the lower air intake apperture, examples are these;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140609660671? ... 1423.l2649

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130545498347? ... 1423.l2649 which appear the same but are a little cheaper.

My question is, with all the well documented LKM hissy fit issues, how would something like these be best wired direct to ignition? We can't all excel at everything and whilst i have competant skills, i can't think how i would tap directly into the ignition loom?

There may be an OEM kit - I think one of the Philips kits actually works with the existing lighting. You should be able to buy the same kit elswhere, cheaper. The kit works on a number of BMWs

If your dealer will print out the EBA number shown on the link, then that also gives you the instructions for fitting :-)

Good to know and thanks, though doubtless it will be rather more wedge than the eBay examples. I'll make some enquiries :)

The OEM kit was for sale by a Geman BMW dealer on ebay (Munich BMW). Not very expensive there, let me see if I can find the link.

Hmm. My dealer says not available as they were never actually type approved?

Oh well eBay options or maybe the German dealer, if PVR can help.

The second ebay items i listed are principally the same kit albeit there is a '4' and an '8' unit.

The wiring info is here led_daylight_4_install_multi_final_02.qxd:Layout 1 but is not for ignition only activation which is what i wanted. Via sidelamps is pretty pointles imo as the whole point of these systems is they're brighter so why have insignificant sidelights switched on with them :?

Many thanks but i can't see any listed and my German is pretty poor to ask a question. Perhaps the eBay deal is easier and i can wire it to suit my preferences?

Link doesn't work - can you try again.

There is an ignition positive in the steering column. Earth to chassis and you're away.

Just a case of, do they look 'OK' on the car or not (depending where you put them, etc)???

You'll have to copy and paste the link ;)

I think getting wiring up to the ignition switch/steering column is more hassle than i would want to bother with tbh.

Fitting? well on the pre-facelift E53 i think they could be possibly inlet into the actual bumper cover which would be neat, or easier, fixed in the main lower air intake as Philips suggest and show on their instructions.

I didn't realise these will be a legal requirement for new builds from 2012

Yeah, was just looking at the link - copied.

Power is easy from steering column. Rubber grommet allows access to footwell/engine bay.

I see where you mean on the pre-facelift. Need to check this out thoroughly for mine on facelift. :scratchhead:

If you need to ask a question or questions in German I might be able to help. My wife is German so I could ask her to translate. I'd probably ask them to answer in English as I doubt she's want to translate too much.

Interesting, they're available via my local Dealer - the same set fits my E71 as well. Considering they are the standard Philips DRL-4 ( Aka Daylight 4 kit ) that seems an odd reply as the Philps system is ECE approved.

DRL's are required on all new builds after Feb 2011, but can be disabled, is the option to disable being removed in 2012? We have the option on both the X6 and Mini although the Mini version actually turns on the dipped headlights and the X6 version turns on the Angel Eyes and rear sidelights. The build sheet for the X6 listed both as additional Euro/UK mandated installs.
