Sat nav maps,.. am I misunderstanding this ?

Post by jonnyivy » Fri Feb 03, 2012 8:17 pm

I've got one of these touchscreen satnav thingys in my X5, can't get the microSD card to display the maps on the screen.
I think the previous owner has tried to activate it using a new 'Sygic' cd and micro sd ( which is inserted into the touchscreen unit)
I tried to re-install the maps from the CD myself but the unit just keeps saying no maps on SD card !
These Sygic satnav systems look like they are meant for mobile phones,.. will they work on the car unit okay too ??
Where do I buy or download some kind of system to store on this micro SD (or any other micro SD ) so I can use the satnav ??
Any sugestions please,

Do you have the executable file in the directory for the SatNav?

If you do, second is the file path setup (you'll find that in the settings).

Both need to be in place, you press the button, unit says where is it, looks at the path in the settings and then you get the executable file being executed!

That's the theory anyway. :scratchhead:

A quick check. Are you using a standard SD Card, or an SDHC Card? The two are not compatible, although a unit specced that to read SDHC type cards can read SD, the opposite is not possible. If it's specced to the SD standard then it won't read SDHC even though the PC can. It might be something this simple, but if not apart from the possibke need to format the card to be used in the nav unit rather than a PC - which appears is the norm for the majority of digital cameras (well all mine anyway) - then I'm puzzled too.

Ouch !!... this is what happens when you didn't study computers etc. when I should have. I'm terrible when it comes to some of the words in the previous posts (give me a front end loader or a JCB anyday).
I don't think that the SD card is the original from the CD box (Sygic).
A computer whizkid from work tells me he downloaded maps from the internet onto an SD microcard and his is working fine.
He wants the 'running program' from my satnav to sort it out for me.
Thought I could maybe sort it out myself before I see him again at work on Monday.

Chances are it's going to be summat simple, but there are so many different 'flavours' of IT systems and formats out there, it gets harder and harder to know what works with what - just look a mobile phone tech. I work in the IT industry for one of the biggest in the world and it's incredibly difficult to keep up with the changes. I'm self taught which just adds a level of 'Doh' to my mistakes....

All sorted now,.. got some great help from the guys at ICEBOXAUTO in Liverpool. Still some companies out there willing to spend some time with you on the phone and give you some help. I didn't even buy the head unit from them personally, but they still helped greatly,
Thanks guys
