I've got the horn!

Post by weirdfish » Sat Mar 10, 2012 8:05 pm

No not that, my horn started going off all by itself whilst driving along, must say I did get some funny looks, usually stopped with a gentle tap on the steering wheel, anyway, I removed the fuse as a temp. measure, but I need to get the centre piece of the steering wheel off to see what's going on, you know, the horn bit.
Anyone know how this comes off, I can see there are a couple of screws underneath, but am unsure as to whether these hold it on, or is it just a push on piece. Not really had a good look yet, it only happened tonight, so thought I would have a look in the morning, as long as this bottle of red doesn't get the better of me.
Thanx.

OK - first thing, that is also your airbag. So be super careful - take the fuse out to be safe. :)

The the screws don't release the airbag, there is a hole either side. You want to stick a flat-head screwdriver into that hole and feel for a spring-like metal rod. Push against it (towards the centre) and each side should pop up.

Connector inside so don't just pull away...

And make sure you use ESD precautions and ground yourself too to prevent any static discharge accidents. Keep well back from it and out of the 'deloy' area. Don't wear anything Nylon! If you have an ESD wrist strap of the type used to work on computers, use it to keep yourself 'bonded' to the vehicle.

The chances summat will go wrong are very, very, very remote as you're pulling the fuses (or battery). The RAF taught all of us to have a very healthy respect for explosives, and an airbag is a bomb after all.

Not only that, but they're bl@@dy expensive to replace.. :headbang:

While Sanj and X5sport are swapping fashion tips, I'll try and help :poke:

This thread might help when it comes to taking the wheel apart:

and this will show you how powerful an airbag is!

Update, been out in the sunshine fiddling, ( don't you dare :P ), with my horn problem, finally got the thing apart, had to study a couple of the threads that were posted to get the angle of the screwdriver just so, anyway, it would appear that someone has been in there before, as one of the screws holding the trim on was missing from where it should have been and was just floating around in there, also, I did notice that the little wires from the air bag/horn unit were slightly trapped under one of the trim clips.
In the end I secured the screw back in place and re-routed the wires back through the proper clip, re-fitted fuses and it all Seems fine for now, but time will tell.
Thanx for all the info supplied.

I've read a few of these dismantle steering wheel threads but I've not yet come across where to find the FUSE?

getting the airbag unclipped (having removed fuse 14)
Is it 14 and where is it please(front rear)?

Fuse number 44 for the air bag, should be behind the glove box, drop the glove box down by pushing in the side to by-pass the rubber stop, then you will find 2 clips above that hold the fuse board cover, this should then drop down to reveal the fuses.

Thanks for that.

44 :o that other write up must have mistaken then.

Are there other tips such as DO NOT PUT KEYS IN IGNITION as it will throw errors because the fuse is out?
