new style mot certificate

Post by fenj66 » Tue Mar 13, 2012 9:46 am

has anyone seen the new "low cost - easy to forge it yourself" style mot certificate? :o
i couldn't believe it when i was given mine last week, thought it was april 1st already! its just a plain white standard a4 sheet from a b/w inkjet printer.
i suppose it can be verified online, but who after turning up to potentially buy a car will have internet access there and then?
i foresee trouble ahead..

Great aren't they... ;) Part of the Government's 'cost saving' measures. We'll have to bring our own paper next!!

And the cost hasn't gone down either.

I couldn't believe it either, that is why I always check online before even viewing a vehicle, you can do this quite easily via the V5 doc. Ref. number, or the current mot number, then just go on to the vosa website and check the history.

I have to agree that they do look a bit poor but just think about it. When did you actually show someone your MOT cert to prove it had an MOT. BiB will know via their online check so no issue with them. A prospective punter will have looked on-line prior to viewing (I do) or you show them the VOSA on-line info/print out.

They could probably do away with tax discs and insurance docs now as well although a current tax disc shows which cars DON'T have tax.

I also couldnt believe it and when handed the plain white paper certificate, I questioned it but like everyone is saying all on computer now. Ok the government probably where paying 5 times what a normal business owner would pay but they must have still only been pence and another line of security against forgeries and it felt like you were getting something for your £50+

Agree with the above. But surely the point is with it being online does away with all the theft of blank MOT forms (which had the embossed stamp) and forgeries - the point being the only way to genuinely check is to lookup the vehicle online.

Electronic for me only to be honest, paper means nothing to me.

Then again, I come from a country where even 20 years ago the MOT certificates were not paper based :poke:

Totally agree with the above except there are doubts over the accuracy of the data held on DfT and DVLA databases.

There have been a number of recent incidents where incorrect data has been supplied and has not been updated leading to drivers being accused by the Police of either no MOT, Insurance or current licence.

A number of motorcyclists have completly lost their entitlements when renewing their licence (as we have to with photo licences) and having to resit their tests.

I still think it should be possible to print something a little better though, and the MOT Approval should come from the DfT servers along with a colour icon/header. It's not rocket science! Generate it as a PDF document. We do it all the time, as do many on line stores. The Civil Service has been, and continues to be, very poor at bringing its tech up to current levels.

Just look at how long ut's taken to replace the V5C documents after a theft about 8 years ago! We got a new one for one of our cars only today. Blue being replaced by Red. That change should have taken days, not years to instigate.
