Reasonable stealer quote for oil change...

Post by gchristofi » Thu Apr 12, 2012 2:00 pm

Just got a quote of 169 all inclusive for an Oil Service at a BMW stealership only 10 miles away. Was thinking of doing this myself but at that price including the Castrol Slx 0w-30 LL04 oil they use, I think i'll get one more stamp in my book to maintain the FBMWSH..... last one though.... not paying for the inspection "work" next time!

a fair point, they only do charge approx 30 + vat for the work, the money is being made on the price of the oil (about 80 + vat!), 15 for filter and 30 quid for pollen filter!! I reckon I'm paying about 80 quid more than it would cost me, but for the hassle etc and last stamp, it's just about justified! Last one though.... me or indy next time.

Welcome to BMW Dealer pricing!! That should also include a 'Safety Check' and fault check. That price sounds the same as the menu based system mine uses too. Even when changing the tyres over they include a safety check and have a good look all round the car - but that only costs £30 inclusive!! Certainly the last time I asked my Dealer, they were charging £150/hr plus VAT!! (£176/hr) and that was two years ago so it's likely to be at least £170+VAT now I would posit.

But then the counter has unfortunately got to be...that if you buy a luxury car then it will also come with luxury car pricing for everything.

I'm certainly grateful for the 15% discount I now get for loyalty (two purchases and four different cars maintained by them).

Indy charge for labour is about half that. You could always take your own oil in.......

Nope. 5W-30 is the right oil....... :)

As long as it's LL04 and shows either B3 or C3 in the spec label - can't remember if it's the ACEA spec or one of the others, but it's fine. C3 being better as it's the latest variant.

EDIT - Sanj beat me to it by seconds....... :headbang:

Mine is coming up for an oil service soon.

Now the possibly dumb qestion- So I can take my own oil (correct spec, sealed etc) and the Stealers would change it for me?

Would they still stamp the service book?

Mines under AUC and I don't want to give them any reason to reject future claims. However I dont want to pay more than I have to either!

If you take the correct spec and quantity, ask for this to be used there should be no problem at all and should save you some money. Ask for a quote for the service including them supplying the oil at the beat price they can do then tell them you want to use your own oil , you should get a better price this way than if you ask for a price streight off with you suppling the oil.

Good luck

Not done it with a BMW, but used to on the Skodas ( the VW ones - before the jokes start! ) as they used to charge too much for oil too. Never had a problem as long as the oil matched the stuff they used. If it's the right stuff and in a still sealed container then they can't really argue about it? Current cars are all on Service Packs so no choice.
