Sat nav?

Post by Cannondale » Mon Apr 23, 2012 9:53 pm

Just been playing around with the sat nav, it has the original 2005 DVD in it. I found it hard to put a destination in it.

Is there anyway to improve this with a newer DVD or easy upgrade?

Nothing will improve that, newer disk will just give you updated maps.

At least you can route via the Eurotunnel which the new system can not do :x

i personally can't stand the OEM sat nav system. thats why i got the hauligan. a lot easier to use and update. if you have the 05 dvd you might have to upgrade to a newer version.

oem is crap, but with the latest sw upgrade (v32) at least u can work with post post codes. which makes it usable. still far off from a tom tom but i found it manageable.

I'm wondering if the underlying map data doesn't actually have the tunnel on it so cannot route via? Some maps show the tunnel, others don't. The ferry routes all show, just not the tunnel, and of course the GPS won't work down the drain anyway. The older maps were from a different supplier to the one BMW now use.

It does show the Eurotunnel on the map when you get close (and go into it). It even shows it on the map when you are in the car park. It just rejects the routing through it for some reason.

Interestingly mine does show the tunnel and routes through it as if it is a road. It is er....non standard
I've also grown to quite like the BMW OEM sat nav - I like to look at a proper map (ie from above) with an easy to twiddle scale and find I can often map read from it for diversions on the move.
My wife has a 2008 Mercedes CLK 500 - really don't like their OEM system at all.

My E53 did it perfectly though, even down to the "take the second ramp to the train" commands (how did it know that ???).

The E70 does not do it ...

I have just completed a 2 day, 1300 mile trip from Kent to Bari in Italy.

I have both the OEM Nav with 2012 maps and a TomTom 720 with 2010 maps and both plotted exactly the same route. The only slight issue was the Tom Tom wanted to come off the motorway north of Milan and then come straight back on.

The OEM equipment does come in for a lot of bad press but I think it's undeserved and this goes someway to enforce my theory. Price is not being considered here.
