Brake light fault

Post by Legeek » Thu May 03, 2012 6:54 pm

Just picked up a 2006 X5 3.0D sport. I quite like it and all is great except that as we where driving it home, I was told that the offside brake light was not working,
OK so I noticed the message check brake light check parking light check taillight was displayed when I started the engine (Must have done it when I picked it up but I did not notice)
So no issues I change the passenger side light bulb (a bit fiddly with the 6 CD changer and DVD player rack in the way) and this made no difference,
Swapped the bulb and holder between passenger and driver side and the fault stayed on passenger side.
So at this point it is not the holder nor is it the bulb.
Any idea? Anyone had this issue ? I would look more into it but with the CD and DVD magazines in the way it is murder to get to the light cluster

Don't no how my X5 differs from the X6 but I had a fault coming up with check brake light, I just replaced 4 bulbs and it was fixed.

Did you replace all 4 bulbs on that side or you replace the brake light bulb 4 times ?

Look at the back of the light cluster where the bulb holder goes. You might want to see if there are burn marks or noticeable spots where the fingers of the bulb holder wipe or come to rest

If you can't get the cluster out in jiffy you may want to use some fine wet and dry over the contact surface area that the bulb holder makes contact with. That may drop any perceived resitance that may be fooling it into a duff bulb

It seems very common that burning and poor connection arises. At the extreme it burns a hole through the cluster metal plate

It did it on mine and a whipped the cluster out, dremmeled the hole clean, filled with solder, flatted off, problem gone

Me thinks the X5 being auto sees a high proprtion of foot on brake pedal for quite long periods with the contacts on the holders doing some impromtu arc welding in the boot

my 2p worth

on the cluster

no just replace 2x bulbs for each side just the once. Brake light and normal back lights. For what they cost just did as perversion.
