I hate DSP
Well after travelling to droitwich last night and staying over in a crappytravel lodge, i took the x5 to car vision this morning to have my hualingan head unit and reverse camera installed, well after being there 30 mins i was informed by the very nice john that he couldnt install it as my car has a dsp amp, to do the job i now need a new amp and fitting wiring kits and god knows what else. all i know is its now going to cost me another £450 ish pounds on top of the £700 for the head unit, wiring loom and camera. Its booked into be done in a fortnight, but im realyy peed off right now. any ideas how much i could make back on selling the now useless parts i will no longer need? including the piggin dsp amp thingy.

Re: I hate DSP
That sucks! Before I went to car vision I looked at loads of DIY guides of fitting Dynavin/Hualingans and most of them seemed pretty straight forward, but a few I saw on DSP cars looked an absolute nightmare! It involved lots of cutting into wiring and looked a huge job! I didn't even know if I had DSP at the time, but I was happy to find out that I dont!
If you're paying £700 for the Headunit are you going for the Dyanvin I take it?
If so you could always get the cheaper Hualingan and not have to pay a fortune? Failing that the DSP Amps seem to go for around the £90-£120 mark on eBay.

hi, no im going foe the hualingan, the rest for the wiring harness, reverse camera, antenna and camera fitting, the extra is for the new amp, fitting kit and all the extra labour cost. gonna be over £1100 when finished. hope its worth it.

I have the dynavin d99 android unit which I paid £650 for. It's some job but no chance would I pay anywhere near £1100. You will never recoup anywhere near the price your paying if and when you sell your x or head unit

Re: I hate DSP
John is selling Hualingan units only.
As you have DSP, he's cutting that part out and connecting into the speaker wires direct using a new amp. Ask him if he can connect the loom direct to the speaker wires (I did that whilst testing with him), may save you the cost of the external amp as the Hualingan unit has one built-in.

Re: I hate DSP
hi sanj, john said doing that would give it a crap quality sound, the other option was to change all the speakers in the car, but i really didnt want to run to the cost of changing all the speakers.

Soooo, add an external amp to the existing speakers??? If so, how does that give you a better sound, speakers still the same. Or am I missing something.
Granted mine has hi-fi speaker upgrade option but it won't sound sh!t! It was fine on mine.

Re: I hate DSP
No idea? He started going on about having to wire it to the front to have to wire it all the way back again and having to install crossovers and I just switched off, he's sending me a list of all the parts he's ordering, I'll let you know what they are and maybe you can explain it to me in English

Re: I hate DSP
I originally changed the speakers to pioneer and just that made a difference with the sound. With the hooligan in it sounded great so im not totally sure why your not changing the speakers.....they were always the weak part of the system anyway.
The best sound comes from seperates in the front and fullrange in the back. The fronts are really quite easy to fit with crossovers.

Re: I hate DSP
Tbh the standard speakers will be a lot better than you think. The weakest part is always the signal being sent to them. You will see an improvement by just changing the headunit in many a standard setup. Usually though that is from aftermarket (Pioneer, Alpine, etc) as they produce a cleaner and stronger signal.
Amps will generally take the input signal and clean it up through its circuitry and boost it hence making huge improvements to the sound quality being heard.
My general advice is always to try just a headunit upgrade first and see how that is. Then if still want more then look to the speakers and then amplification.

Re: I hate DSP
Well after 7 hours John finally managed to install the new head unit and amp. im really pleased with it, apart from a couple of things and hope you guys can give me some ponters. firstly there is a noise coming from the left side speakers 1 on each door that gets louder when the accelerator peddle is pressed. its like a buzzing noice thats gets to a high pitchy sound and is really annoying, secondly to anyone who has this unit installed, when you plug your ipod in, hoe do you play individual albums, as all the songs just appear in alphabetical order.
thanks guys

Re: I hate DSP
Have you tried adjusting the dash brightness to see if your buzzing stops? I have mine on fully bright but I am aware that on the Hualingan/Dvnavin there can be an interference noise if the brightness is turned down too low, don't ask me why but It does. (I'm on about the wheel near the foglight/headlight switch btw)
To select the Track/Album/Playlist etc you need to scroll to the very top and select the top button (which IIRC should be blank) and that takes you back a menu until you are at the below screen:

Re: I hate DSP
thanks n1k85 but no joy on he brightness front, worked out that the sound is the equivelent to a dentists drill at high speed. good job i have an alternative car, as driving the x5 is unbarable at the moment. Im still waiting for John to return my call, but the thought of another 2 and a half hour trip down to droitwich is not something i want to do, its already cost £1,100 plus over £200 in petrol. I went to visit a cat audio shop locally today and they think its most likely a bad earth to the amp, but are not prepared to look at it when its someone elses work. also thanks for the info on the albums
