The advantages and disadvantages of towing with a diesel

Post by B5tew » Mon May 28, 2012 4:18 pm

Just got back from a weekend in Torquay and was well impressed with the mpg on the way back going nice and steady managed this
Image
I re-set trip 2 when we left Torquay and it was showing 29.8 mpg until we hit the traffic in Bristol
Then there is the disadvantage of diesel
Look at the state if my back bumper !
Image
Still a quick wipe with showroom shine will soon get rid of that
And the X towed beautifully as always

We are away next week with the Cvan.

I can only dream of 22 mpg towing :D

But I am hopefull to improve on my last towing trip of 17Mpg.

Bring on the remap and I migh even get 18 towing :D :D

Nice now pertol is back down to 1.29 / liter

But at least the back of my car and the Cvan will be clean :D and I have a lovely V8 sound track to listen too :D

Hang on a sec. Diesels arn't designed to have tailpipes. Perhaps now you know why

Still think the pipes look nice on B5tew's car definitely, worth the effort of wiping it down after.

Wish I coud get 29 from my 4.4

That is easy enough, just reset you comp and find a long down hill :D stop at the bottom and dont drive any further.

To be honest I have not noticed the rear of the car getting any more soot on it than before I had the exhausts fitted, only when I am pulling the caravan and then it is all on the bumper. The caravan used to get soot all down the sides of it but this no longer happens with the new exhausts.
Strange but true :?
Its a lot easier to clean my back bumper than clean the whole caravan.
I need somone with a degree in aerodynamics to tell me why this is. ;)

No knowledge of aerodynamics, but it would make sense that with the van attached, the air from the roof of the car is drawn up over the van causing a depreciation in pressure behind the car, and with the exhausts being higher up the air would be drawn up taking the exhaust and soot with it.

Previously, I suspect that the draw from under the van sucked the soot etc up round the sides.

Just my uneducated guess as to the possibility, please feel free to ignore.

The advantages and disadvantages of towing with a diesel

Post by garethdeb » Thu May 31, 2012 5:54 pm

I have the same pipes on my 3.0d and get the same problem, exacerbated after towing the van. Spoke to an exhaust fabricator who said he could extend the pipes for me but I'm wondering if that would just chuck the soot all over the van instead of the bumper?
