Nothing like trying to scare people, is there?
Nothing like trying to scare people, is there?
Just been reading an advert for an X5 4.6 on pistonheads, and came across this statement.
21. Automatic Transmission Replaced - WARNING: If you are buying a BMW X5 with 80k+ miles then check if it has the automatic transmission reconditioned/replaced. These fail on ALL BMW X5's between 80k and 150k. Speak to any automatic transmission specialist and they will tell you about the high failure rates and that they fix on average about 3-4 X5's in a month. This car has had this work done so complete peace of mind.
I know they can cause problems, but to state that they fail on ALL BMW X5's is stretching the truth a tad.
Needless to say they have had the gearbox replaced on this particular vehicle, so I suppose it's a sales ploy.

Well that's a load of bull how can they say ALL, when I asked my indy what his view was on them he said they might fail between 30k-250k was the range he'd seen, he also pointed out that some are fine, my old x5 had 155k on when I sold it, I never put a box or reconed the trans and there was no evidence in the history to suggest something as major as this had been done and there was reciepts for everything else however small, I think he's just trying to make his stand out!

that's just trying to justify his spend on a new transmission box - trying to score some points for it >:D

'ALL' is just a teensy bit broad.....
)
Mine actually went at less than 42k. There are plenty out there with no issues at all and as said higher mileages.
It's something to bear in mind, but no more than that. And there are owners who have had more than one go!

it is to bear in mind but i do think its another forum scare monger which if we all listened to we would all ride pedal bikes at that, is it possible to get a post started to see who has replaced their box and at what milage, and also reply your milage and weather you havent and just see what % of x5s have actually had this?

Re: Nothing like trying to scare people, is there?
A few guys I spoke to said that their x was never the same after they had replaced their gear boxes...
Re: Nothing like trying to scare people, is there?
It's a good sales ploy and that's all. Plant the seed in people's minds that it is a huge issue BUT that yours has been resolved and is the one to buy for that reason.

I suppose he has to try something to sell it, nothing in this range is moving at the moment, ( i should know ), and seeing as its got "starship" mileage on it and he's still asking top end money for the car.
It's a good advert with plenty of info, but it's almost too good, I think you can overload an advert as well as undersell a car.
And where the hell do you buy LPG for 55p a litre?

Trouble at the moment is everyone wants everything for next to nowt all this 'there's a recesion' or 'there's a credit crunch' bull s*#t, and the other problem is some people are so desparate their selling there car at webuyanycar prices which doesn't help the rest of us who arnt willing to give them away!
