I fancied having the exhaust tail pipes coming out of the back of the car each side instead of hiding away under the rear skirt. Mines is the 3.0l D E53, and just read about the exploits of other members doing the same. Then I had a look on 'youtube' to see how it sounded and what they did,..it looked like they had removed the rear silencer boxes and just ran a pipe from where it was cut , then out to the back where the oval/rectangular/or twin tail-pipe was attached.
Is this okay to do this to a finely tuned motor ?, thinking along the lines of back-pressure issues etc.
If it was as simple as doing that, hell I have a friend who is a master-welder who builds and designs hollow framed garden gates and the likes,...I'd just get him to do the job !
Any thoughts please ?

my mates just done this to his 525d, it sounds amazing like a petrol v8 or something!! aparently it runs fine and is not required for the mot, im fairly tempted myself....

HI Guys
I had this done on my 3.0D when I first bought it,had the backboxes took out,and straight pipes out the rear skirt cutouts. I found that it affected the torque, and was a bit flat compared with the standard backboxes.
I also got tired of the chavvy sound it made.
I wished I had gone to a place in the midlands which I saw on ebay, they leave the original backboxes on and remove the blanking caps from the rear skirt and weld dummy tailpipes on to the back of the backboxes.
So there is no increased noise, and the looks of the 4.8, or whatever pipes you fancy
( midlands exhausts I think they were called ) now I have had to reattach my original backboxes with 50mm butt connectors, but they dont sit perfectly square now so cant have the dummys fitted now. GUTTED !!!

Ahhh,..so some of the back exhaust tips are 'dummies',...never knew that ! Maybe if I spoke nicely to Shadrack he could describe the proccess of welding them on. I also noticed that ebay are selling replacement backboxes which I imagine would replace the original and have the outlet facing the rear where I could weld/ join on the end tips ?

So just to prove my ignorance to the exhaust systems on the X5's,.....why can't the rear boxes from a 4.6 / 4.8 be used to gain the pipe exits as desired on the diesel models ??

Hi John,
the back boxes from the 4.8 for example can be made to fit, but will require some fabrication work.
Tbh, it's personal choice on which route to take. As mentioned above by horizon, he did bin the back boxes off but didn't like the sound. You however may really like it. Why not consider getting the down turned tips removed and new ones (with the slight extra pipework required) welded on so the are functioning also?
