Cars made after 2006 up to Sept 2011, with the electronic key.  E53 not affected.  Lord knows what it's going to do to insurance premiums!

Well my X6 build is Jan 2011 and I have heard diddly squat from BMW ...... yet.

However, it was re flashed just under a couple of months ago due to my alarm going off every day at 7am so presuming mine has the new "security update".  :noexpression:

Mine is in tomorrow, and only thanks to this site.  I had to chase Dealer to find out.  Don't bet on yours having been done as the update has only just been released (within the last 2 weeks or so).  Call the Dealer and check.

bmw apparently is not reaching out the owners so don't wait for them to contact you, they would address if the issue is raised with them by the owners!£!!!

this approach while knowing very well of course that all those cars are vulnerable!!

yeah i like their excuse as well! that's what makes them a class act i guess!

I would hope an additional security layer such as locking out the systems without a special PIN as they have with the Nav, or disabling the functionality so a key is only available via a dealer.  I don't expect it will be long before someone finds out....and the way around it.....as has been done with the Nav now.

It's a constant game of escalating, but I hope insurance premiums don't 'escalate'.  Probably have to declare whether the mod has been done now, although I would hope - naively I know - that the update will be applied automatically at the next service anyway.

It's BMWs attitude that really annoys me - both at a Corporate and Dealership level.  They knew and kept quiet even though the Press, Police, local Community Security Groups etc all knew.  A yer to fix existing cars even thugh new ones were sorted is way to long.  I wonder what Audi & Merc think.....either good or bad news depending upon whether or nt they do or don't have to fix it on their own models.

I do hope those insurers who have refused to pay out because of their insistence that you need the keys to nick the car now get forced to pay up - especially if the Owner can prove they still have both original keys in their possession.

Are we sure the E53 isn't vulnerable to this?

I totally disagreed with how watchdog covered the issue, they should have pointed it out in less detail, what I thaught is it told any budding car thefts out there that there was now a device available from £200 upwards if they google it that would make keys and the start any bmw in the affected time slot? I think thefts will now increase, as with insurance the premium for any car with a bmw badge on will probly double weather in the affected age or not!
