Putting a thinner tyre on the back 4.6is
Hey Guys,
Probably a silly question.
I have 275/40/20 on the front and 315/40/20 on the rear.
I can't seem to find part worn snow tyres for the rear.
Could I fit a 275/40/20 snow tyres on the rear to match the front as its only slightly thinner?
Thanks
James

Your wheels in the rear are wider than front ones if you put 275s in the back i think it would look funny and would possibbly damage your wheels. Winter tyres on 20s would not be the ideal choice. Recommended size is 18s or may be 19s

Re: Putting a thinner tyre on the back 4.6is
Fitting a 275/40 profile on that wide a rim may be asking too much as the beads & sidewalls will be at the wrong angles with the rim being at least an additional 25mm wider so increasing the risk of it 'popping' off the rim under side load conditions.

Your wheels are different width j10 front and j11 rears. There's over an inch and a half of difference so would be very warry of putting on a thinner tyrer. Have you considered a dedicated winter set up? With a bit of research and web surfing you could end up with a decent set of rims with winters on for around £500.

Thanks guys I wont be doing that then so it looks like I need to buy smaller wheels and then buy snow tyres.
Around £500 you say Don. Could I get a cheap steel set of wheels for it do you think in like a size 18" or 19"? As I would only use them for the snow and they would just sit there as I have the 20"s for the rest of the year.
I used the X last year in the snow and the Michelin's were amazing. Managed to pull a Sprinter van and an ASDA delivery van up a hill. Pulled a Toyota Previa that was on it's side out of a ditch too.
Maybe I should see how bad it gets first...

I managed to get a set of 18" wheels from an X5 se model. Cost £250 although they came with summer tyres on them, these were scraped. Purchased part worn winter tyres for £240. These are like new so should last a few years. If you are going to look at this route, it could be worth ringing round to see what tyres are available before purchasing any rims. I'm not sure if steel wheels are available for the size you require.
I was chatting to another member on here who had a set of rims available but carriage costs to NI made them too expensive. I'll dig out the members details, and pass on, they may still be available.

Sorry James,
I've deleted the PMs form the member and can't remember his name. I'll search through my posts and see if I can get the details that way.

check if you can put 18"s on a 4.6, if it has got the big brakes like the 4.8 I dont think you can

I always understood that the 4.6 has the big brakes as mentioned so you will need 19'' wheeels
Re: Putting a thinner tyre on the back 4.6is
Don't be put off putting on 20" winters, I've just done it and the car has been superb in the snow and ice. I've gone with a higher profile than the standard 20" sizes but the Yokohama winters come in non runflat in the OEM sizes.
I'm on Pirelli Ice and Snow in 295/45/20 and 265/50/20 sizes. You could go 295/40/20 and 275/40/20 successfully
I think, however, I haven't personally tried that combination.
I also run my Z4MC on wide 19" low profile winters and have had no problems even in the two really harsh winters we've had in the last few years.
