Windscreen wash pumps

Post by Imy » Sun Dec 09, 2012 12:52 pm

Hi everyone,

My windscreen washers haven't worked since I bought the car. Me and Sanj identified the pumps needed replacing. Iv replaced them with the cheap aceparts crap on eBay (they were a tenna for the pair do I thought I'd try them first)

Everything is working kind of... Water is now shooting out the washers but the pressure at which they are coming is pathetic. They make it on the screen barely.

Is this due to the pumps possibly being crap?

it could well be that the little white filters into which the pumps fit on the reservoir are blocked up with goo.
pull them out and rinse well with a jet of water.

this issue happens regularly on mine but a quick reverse rinse blast of water shifts the blockage. i think cheapo windscreen wash fluid is the cause!! ::)

I had an issue with mine when I stopped using BMW fluid and used a Halfrauds concentrate.  It generated said white gunk and the rear blocked.

BMW actually changed everything under warranty, but I've used OEM screenwash ever since.  It might be that with an 8-litre reservoir there is enough time for microbial activity and something in the BMW mix kills it?

Dealers will supply the concentrate in 5-litre bottles (& 25-litres too if you ask)........cheaper than their fancy 1-litre standard bottles.

To update this thread, Imy came to see me about 3 weeks back and I did remove shed loads of goo from the filters and the bottom of the bottle.

The washers were U/S and proved to be shot by replacing them with mine. Not buying OEM has meant the new ones aren't as powerful, me thinks....

Did both pumps fail at the same time? If so that sounds very unlikely  :o I've found that with the wrong screen wash, the goo can come back very quickly.

Thinking the same but putting just one of my washers in and swapping them, before adding the second was the only way to get them to work/squirt.

The goo was intense though! Imy get those iPhone pics up man!

Sanj
When are you heading up this way? If you do the mechanic on the go business. Will make sure to get you enough diesel to keep the X happy and enough ale to keep you happy :)
Make sure to have a co-pilot to drive you back home though.
