Flat battery

Post by awj85 » Wed Dec 26, 2012 6:05 pm

Not good on boxing day eh.  Jumped in the car (2001 X5 4.4 V8)  Turned the key and nothing but click click click noise.  Flat battery, again.  Jumped it off another car as needed to go out with the wife and son already waiting in the car.  This has happened before and i put the battery in charge overnight and following day took the car for a longish drive to ensure battery fully charged.

Battery is charing when engine running as my mate put a multi meter on the terminals to check.

Thing is the battery is going to be under the LPG in the boot.  ::)

Question 1
Is a job for a complete novice to remove the tank or is best left to someone who knows what they are doing?

Question 2
What could be causing the battery to drain, as it has been okay for the last few weeks since i charged it and have driven it regulary?

Question 3
Any ideas as to the cost for a battery for the X5?

Thanks for any help

Pass on Q1.

Q2.  Battery lasts around 6 years so it may just be at end of life.  Other causes can be the Final Stage Resistor (FSR or 'Hedgehog' ) device which if faulty will cause the a/c fans to run in after the ignition is switched off.  Check the car is 'going to sleep' by looking at the orange tell-tale LED by the 'P' on the gear selector.  It should go out after around 16 minutes.  If it doesn't then something is keeping the car 'awake' and draining the battery.  Have you any after market mods fitted?

Q3.  Have a look on Eurocarparts as there's often a discount code - and possibly one in the Forum.  Cost anywhere from £80 - £110 depending upon supplier and discount.  The most used ones by Forum members are Bosch Silver range.  S4 to S6 with the higher number giving better performance and extra year of warranty (4 - 6 years).

q1- probably best for someone who knows lpg to remove, check though underneath as my old lpg x5 had a flap so battery could be removed from the bottom, also i think it could be done with some advice but up to you.
q2-search on here as theres a load of possibilitys
q3-around £100ish- euro car parts bosch s5 is what you want

wow thanks for that guys.  am now off to see if i can access the battery from unerneath the car.  i know the car goes to 'sleep' as i've already checked LED next to the P does go out.
I will be looking at the Bosch S range then.  ;)

Hi, not good news but should be a fairly easy sort!

If no flap underneath, cant remember this!? Then tank should be easily lifted out of the way - it is on mine, I asked the question when fitted. Best with as empty a tank as possible obviously - unbolt then lift up and out the way taking care with pipes etc.

A good battery should be sourced for around £80 - £100

All the best
