My advise (from owning both) would be if you have a perfectly good x5 that you love, get it lpg'd however all the lpg ones that say 40+mpg they don't! When you work out petrol,lpg. Lack of stations, lack of range if you use the petrol tank as a range extension it kinda defeats it, also now the used prices are very close maybe only 1k diffenence between diesel and petrol versions, just my two peneth

Yes but is it worth the conversion for £5 saving as you said before, it's going to take a long time to recoup your conversion, plus the price of a yearly service.

A difficult dilemma I know.  But what I'm getting at, is although there's only £1000 between V8 and diesel, I would try selling your car on Gumtree, eBay to see what the real price is.  It will also do no harm to ring around perspective diesels and seeing what they are prepared to accept.  This may help with the route you chose to follow.

The comments about LPG stations, limited range etc. are very valid and should form a big part of you reasoning.

i thought the difference between diesel and petrol was alot more than £1000? have diesels really dropped that much?

anyways doing a little bit of math on my end:

I fill up 70 litres at 70p which is £49. out of that i get 250 city town driving stop start and i drive with a heavy foot when i can.
according to my calculation that is around 18.75mpg at 70p a litre? but then as Shad has mentioned I will use around £5 of petrol per tankful give or take a couple of quid depending on whether its winter or summer.

I dont know how a diesel compares to this and i very rarely drive motorway so couldnt give any stats on that.

If it helps with your maths:

45 litres will be £63 and I will get about 250 around town only.

I only do about 3,000 miles a year, as the X is just a weekend toy. Ive never seen less than 25 MPG and 90% of my journeys are around town. I had a run up to scotland last year, loaded up with 4 lads and beer, to a sailing holiday in the western isles. 80MPH all the way ( where possible ) and car returned 32 MPG.
Its not been remapped, thats on a 3.0D

Lucky for me a Morisons station is 2 miles down the road, same again for shell but shell don't do gas their.
Past them every day, then 1/2 from work out of my way but gas again. So I would not be short on gas should I find a descent place to do the conversion within a reasonable traveling range.

You can get a 95ltr tank in the spare wheel well of the X5 . Mine fills to about 75 / 76 litres + - depending on the weather -  that is well over 300 miles worth tooting about and touching on 400 on a gentle run, so availability isnt really an issue especially as I have Autogas and other LPG sites loaded in the Hualingan. Servicing costs are minimal, depending on the system and milage covered you may need to change the filters every 20,000 miles and perhaps a checkover of connections with gas leak tester (£6 B&Q) and if you are DIY minded, software to check the regulator pressure - £20 max. New systems piggy back off the main engine ECU and connect into the OBD system to read trim values, so they really are fit and forget. The days of the single point gas ring mixer are long gone along with stories of blowbacks and disasters..

If I hadnt bought mine already converted, I would have fitted it myself as I did my previous Range Rover. But saying that, some of the deals on offer these days its hardly worth the saving. Prins is considered the top end kit, followed by BRC, Zavoli,Romano etc.

Think about all  the things you have fixed on your X5 and think about having to do it again.

And do you really want a lorry engine under the bonnet :rofl:

That's some good info above, I have only got 400 miles out of a tank a handful of times. But cost over £120 to do it, that better then a 50% saving.
I was booking mine in to be converted with a BRC system, but asked a few questions and was not happy with my reply.
They offered to install a lube system 1 at £90 the other £200 both plus VAT.

Are these needed on the top end kits, or any kit for that matter.

Lube kits are only required on certain vehicles, the BMW n62 not being one of them. They add a small amount of lube to the inlet to lubricate the valve seats.
