They don't run on any 64-bit OS. But there is a way around it.
Windows 7 can run a tool called a 'Virtual Machine'. This is a virtual PC running inside the Windows 7 environment.
If you have a copy of XP you can load that into your VM and load up the drivers and other software and away you go.
It can be a bit fiddly to set up initially but once done you just select the VM and jobs a good un.....
Your laptop needs to have a processor that runs Intel Virtualisation Technology, have a decent amount of RAM so you can 'assign' part of it to the VM along with a (small) chunk of the hard drive.
More info here. You can also download other VM software from companies like Oracle (Virtualbox).

yeah that used to be my method for other things except teh crappy old lappy's batty has now nearly gone dead! (whole thing might die pretty soon as well i think) plus don't they recommend not to run the lappy on mains when coding as the charging circuit could have interference with comms?
so before i go buy some win xp 32 sw for an aging platform, isn't there a win 7 64 bit version?
surely all bmw shops can't be hoping to run win 32 forever?

Re: Bmw INPA Ediabas, NCS Expert - Win 7 compatible?
32-bit software is still about and XP itself doesn't go completely out of support until 2014. A lot of businesses wait until absolutely the last minute to update software. It's how companies in the IT Industry, along with contractors, can on occasions make obscene amounts of money migrating old systems to newer versions, and with virtual machines available some run via that method instead.
Windows 7 will run XP programmes in 'compatibility mode' too......so again there is no drive to force companies to modernise.
