Approaching 100K miles, What to change?
Approaching 100K miles, What to change?
Hello
I'm about to purchase a 90K plus vehicle and was wondering what you guys would change.
I would also would like to know what parts are best to change at the mythical 100k mark.
The car will be 10 years old next year so I was already planning to treat it to some new running gear (e.g bushes, drops, sways etc) never done any of these before but it's worth a try
I am going to bite the bullet and change the transmission oil.

Re: Approaching 100K miles, What to change?
I wouldn't bother changing anything on the running gear, unless you have any reason to do so. I bought a 55 plate x5 with 93k on it 14 months ago. I haven't had to do anything on the running gear, I've got 101k on it now.
I have changed the battery ( highly recommended. ) £ 100.00. Bosch S5
I have had the gearbox serviced, oil, filter and pan. £170.00 at auto gearbox specialist.
The CV boots were replaced at MOT before I got her.
I replaced the air filter, and oil filter, and changed the oil ( euro car parts ) when 2 green lights were on, I like to know the oil is good, even though FBMWSH.
Set of winter tyres Vred extreme same size as summers,
I'd save your brass for the unexpected.
A also check the crankcase breather to see if its a filter or vortex type, change to vortex. If not, Definite job to do, air filter at same time as they need the same bits stripping off, pain to do but worth it.

+1 on the breather filter. If it looks like a gunked up foam bog roll it's the early type (fitted well into 2005 and possibly 2006) and needs replacing.

Order an air filter if you are going to even have a look, most air filters never get changed even at dealers, because its a long winded job, strip it down during the week, so if its a foam one you can get a vortex one from the steelers and fit it and rebuild all the plastic bits. As mentioned the back screw is a git to get out, apart from that fairly easy, just follow the instructions on the link X5 sport has done for you.

Re: Approaching 100K miles, What to change?
When I did mine (air filter and checked the separator) , I took the EGR valve off too and gave is a damn good clean using carb cleaner. Doesn't take long and will help things run better.

 Well that's put paid to the vortex breather, egr valve and air filter that's impossible to get to. Good job Sanj asked the question
On a petrol I'd do plugs, air filter, fuel filter and gearbox and axle oil change.

I would just do things as needed and when the service indicators\ milage dictates it, 100k is just a mythical number I remember wwhen I had to convince my mate who always changed pre 100k, then he kept his audi over 100k and I was like see they don't explode at 100,000miles!

Re: Approaching 100K miles, What to change?
Totally agree with Shadrack. 100,000 is nothing nowadays. My Saab 9-5 Aero was on on 180K before I wrote it off and my last Discovery had 165K on it when I sold it. Neither had any issues and I still see the Disco around. Both my X5 and my wife's compact will be hitting the 100K by the end of the year and I'm not worried. Just keep on top of any little issues and keep it serviced.
