Nav screen upgrade - enquiry

Post by Stevejspm » Sun Feb 24, 2013 11:58 am

I currently have the information screen with cassette slot behind. Are there other models that have cd slots or even DVD slots behind the screen?

My X5 is a 2004 facelift with nav, phone, Bluetooth etc.

Thanks in advance.

The only other choice that was available was one with a MiniDisc - which we have on the E46 - but apparently it's too deep (front to back) to be fitted to the E53, and so we got lumped with the cassette only option for OEM on these cars.  I did ask when mine was ordered, but they said cassette or cassette!!

I think you'll also find that anything other than an e53 screen will not look right as the screen angle is specific to the X5.

My 06 has a cassette hole and who was still using cassette in 2006.
06 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.2 SC
05 Mercedes SL350

Thanks for your responses. I would of thought at the very least they'd have a cassette or CD option like the E39's. come to think of it BMW were a little late in comparison to the E39's newer model (can't think of the model number) fitting the 'Idrive' to the X5. Am I right in saying the Idrive is from 2007 onwards?

Also what is the touch screen system people have been fitting in their X5's in replacement of the current nav screen? I'm sure I've seen a few different types but overall which ones are the better ones & which are best to avoid?

I have to admit to being similarly disappointed when I bought my E53 in 2005.  I had stopped using cassettes at least 5 years beforehand!  Even my 1998 Skoda Octavia had a CD based system!!  Perhaps the US (as the major sales market) had not moved over to that tech, so BMW left the ancient stuff in there.

The iDrive was installed from the E70 onwards - and those come in several versions too.

The head units are from people like Hualingen and Pioneer.  Several threads about them and install tips floating around here.
