Gearbox oil & filter change

Post by andym3 » Thu Apr 04, 2013 7:18 pm

I was just wondering roughly how much it costs to get the auto gearbox oil & filter changed?
I want to get this done ASAP, as my X5 3.0d has done 109k miles. My last X5 was the 4.4 V8 and the gearbox packed up at 102k miles.

It was done because the sump gasket started to weep. The ATF fluid was £90ish and the gasket £17ish (I think) and then the rest was all labour (I used em because they all say the gearbox is sealed for life and you need the right tool to take the oil out).

Now that's not the case, any Indy can do it (in most cases). Learnt a lot since the early days. Get a quote from Jason.

No differences noted but it only had 35k on it at the time and I never had any issues then. I did ask them to check it was OK and they said the ATF oil that came out was clean with no burnt smell and clean (no filings). It's a good preventative maintenance thing to do and at 109k I'd do it for peace of mind.

I had mine done when I bought the car at 106k and really helped the shifts to be smoother and sharper. Not slushy like they were before. On sports mode the shifts are very sharp as they should be on the 4.6is. I had it done at a local transmission specialist that do rebuilding and reconditioning. £130 I paid.

Just what I wanted to hear!  8)
I have found a automatic gearbox specialist local to me & got a quote for £166 for the oil & filter to be changed.

I've just had mine done , get the transfer box oil changed as well .
Doesn't cost much more , and my Indy highly recommended it .

I was also going to do the differentials , but they said that's not necessary .

My total bill for an engine oil inspection , change gearbox and transfer box oil , Autologic
electric test coz my door mirrors faulty , and a pollen filter was £395

The oil for Transfer box was less than £30
