Well i eventually took the plunge on Thursday and got the oil and filter changed in my gearbox and all i can say is "WOW" i really didn't think that it would make "THAT" much of a difference but i really can't put into words how happy i am, I am so happy i could sh!t in my hand and slap it on my head haha.
The gearbox was really smooth during the gear changes prior to the oil change or so i thought, no i can say it is virtually unnoticeable when she changes, the only complaint i had previously was sometimes when cruising up to a junction and then accelerating it was as though the gearbox didn't know what gear it wanted and usually ended up in a loud bang, a massive surge of power and a clap of thunder in my underpants. I have since tried to emulate the junction problem and it just won't do it anymore.
Well happy and at 330 quid (including enough oil for the next change in two months time) I really would say if your car has approx 80-90k on it then it is money well worth spent.

You have to do it again in two months ? Presumably because it dislodges a load of crud? How much does the second visit cost ?

Re: Holy gearbox oil change batman.
I think the 2nd, and sometimes 3rd change, is to ensure that all the old oil is out. You only get about 1/3rd out at each change because oil hides in the torque converter and other far off places inside the box.

Re: Holy gearbox oil change batman.
Glad it's much better but how much are the 2nd and potentially 3rd changes going to cost?

Re: Holy gearbox oil change batman.
Well the next one will just be the price of the filter and an hours labour as i already have the oil, so about 80 quid I would think.

Re: Holy gearbox oil change batman.
I watched the mechanic do the job and he drained approx 4 to 4.5 litres of oil out and TIS says it is 9 - 10 litres for a dry fill. So really only half the oil has been changed. The torque converter is the problem as it doesn't drain when you remove the drain plug. A bit of a PITA but it has to be done.

Re: Holy gearbox oil change batman.
Where did you get the oil from or was it provided by the mech. My 4.8 is going in for service on Friday and i'm also considering a gearbox oil change. I have 92k on mine now.
Re: Holy gearbox oil change batman.
I got him to order it from bmw as he gets trade prices. If you are just getting it changed once I would recommend getting 6 litres to allow for flushing his pump and a little bit of spillage during the filling process.
