Does anyone know if it is possible to fold electrically operated folding mirrors by hand without damaging the mechanism.
I have an 05 E53 3.0D Sport.
At the moment the drivers side folds then goes straight back out, the passenger side just makes a horrible noise and does not move.
I am going on a car ferry next month, I am expecting it to be a bit tight. If I can fix the electrics, great but if not, no so good. Would hate it to get damaged.

OK, so that may have been a silly question. Just got brave and found out you can! At least I will be able to make her a bit slimmer on the ferry. I will try to sort electrics later. Seen a few posts on here already.

Re: Can you fold electric folding mirrors manually
There's a how to on here for fixing the micro switch that usually causes this failure. Just took the covers off both my mirrors to reset the micro switch on mine (drivers side) and check the passengers one. Straight forward to do.

Re: Can you fold electric folding mirrors manually
Thanks for that Raj. I have looked at the how to. My drivers side mirror folds by hand really easy and I can hear the switch clicking. The cover didn't look like it was fitted correctly and came off easily. Switch and metal arm both looked good.
Passenger side however, when I got brave was stiff to move by hand. The cover didn't want to come off and I didn't want break something so I'm gonna go back to it. I couldn't hear the switch clicking on that side so I'm wondering if the electric bits are stuck or broken or something.
I would love to be able to press the button and the mirrors fold, even thinking about an intravee so I can make it do that when I lock it.
As I said earlier, at least now I can fold the mirrors on the ferry if necessary.
I have seen some links to lots of info and will get it sorted.
My second x5, love them and actually quite enjoy spending time sorting stuff out.
Sorry long post again!
