Headlight washers.

Just getting the bugs out of my X5.

Fixed rattling sunroof, Check
Windscreen washers low pressure. Cleaned filters. check.

Noticed the headlight washers also very low pressure. Is the pump for the headlight washer a pull out like the screen wash?  I'm assuming it has a similar style filter that's probably blocked.

When I cleaned the filter for the front screen , I drained the screen wash fluid into a clear bottle and it was totally full of black funk. Not surprised the little filter was blocked.

Going to drain it again and try to clean the tank this time. Just need confirmation that the headlight washer pump is just another push in part.

there are 3 pumps fixed onto the bottom part of that reservoir..

one for the windscreen, one for the headlights and the 3rd is for the rear.

if u removed and cleaned it suprised that u didn't notice it though..  :noexpression:

I only removed and cleaned the pump and filter for the windscreen jets. Fixed that fine but didn't check the headlight washers until later. Back jets were still working ok so didn't bother.

Ill just pull the whole thing during the weekend and give it a proper clean out.

I spotter the third pump just wanted to check if it was clamped in or just another push fit before I go pulling it out

The headlight washer pump is the one right next to the windscreen pump. The pump to the front of the reservoir on its own is for the rear.

Ahh, Thanks, I had assume the two pumps at the back were front and rear screens. I can clean that one easy enough The last pump is kinda underneath the reservoir isn't it?, If I'm removing the entire reservoir to clean it, does that just pop out too, any sensors I need to watch out for, IE washer fluid low warnings?

they just pop-out. they're push fit type.. remove the screws and lift the resevoir out, then pull teh pumps out..

obviously helps if low on screenwash.

When I pull the washer bottle, disconnect and clean everything, it takes a good while until my headlight washers work again following re fitting. Not sure why this is but they always eventually start working over following weeks (so don't panic if u find this too)

Air in the pump and tubes?  Some of the systems have anti back-flow valves which need pressure to open them and if air is in there it is of course compressible so needs to be removed......well that's my theory today anyway

Thanks for all the info guys, I'll give it a better cleaning during the weekend, and clean both the other pumps/filters.. I only bothered with one filter, I was in a hurry

I syphoned out all the screenwash into a jug (as it was totally full), and then strained all the blank gunk from the fluid with a coffee filter!.  I know I'll use all the fluid before more bio life forms decide to regrow in there, and in the future I'll stick with BMW screenwash as everyone seems to say it is better anyway

I'll pop by later if I have any more problems with it !
