Front discs and pads

Post by Johnny-p » Fri Nov 08, 2013 8:53 pm

Hi all

After having my X for four months now I am well chuffed with it..
I bought it a bit cheap so was expecting a few trips to the Indy!!!
As has been said in my previous posts I have had a few bits done to it to get rid of an annoying vibration that was there when I bought it..
I put on a full set of new rubber/ laser alignment/front bushes and this SEEMED to have cured it.
HOWEVER I towed my caravan last week and my senses are always a bit heightened when doing this and it didn't seem right.
Took it to the Indy today and he gave it a good thrashing on a test drive  >:(
Turns out I have a warped f/n/s disc that's causing the remaining vibration...

Anyhoo I'm waffling so the question I'm asking is....
He's quoted me £298 for new pads and discs fitted..
Does that sound right??
I can buy them myself for a little over £100..
Is it a specialist job or could I take it to my local mechanic without problems as he would only charge an hours labour?
I've spent a lot so far and the coffers are getting sparse..

He also said the gearbox was running a bit slow and said an engine and box software upgrade would sort that for £50.

Fingers crossed that's the last of it for a while as on top of all this I had the breather/oil separater brake pipes and fluid change.

I don't think I could bare driving at car height again!!

Front discs are a piece of piss to do. Diy them and save even more!

Defo DIY job.  Wheel off, remove pads (you'll be fitting new ones anyway), caliper and one screw and that's it I think.  You might even get away with leaving the caliper in place.  Or you source the parts and he fits.

Gearbox "running a bit slow"!  What on earth is that supposed to mean?  Is there a fault code showing?

Sorry reading it back it does sound a bit thick!!

What he was referring to was the delay in throttle response/gearbox reaction..

He said a lot more but I'm afraid most went over my head :-[

Had it hooked up for diagnostic when I first bought it as the alarm kept going off- bonnet switch. No other codes found..

Ahh......There certainly have been firmware updates for the transmission.  Whether they were to improve response times I don't know.  Most of the comments I've seen referred to the dreaded 'lurch'.

You will need to remove calliper to change discs but still not difficult. It's just a few bolts etc and very straight forward. Deffo diy or local mechanic job for sure.

Discs/pads are a diddle on the front but if your local mechanic will do it for say £40-50 cash it's not really worth getting dirty for especially in this weather.

I'm not convinced a 2005 would need a software update on the gearbox. Our 2006 has the same software loaded as a friends 2005 and both are dated from the factory the main dealer has also confirmed it's the latest available.

Surely the box just needs the driver learning reset. From memory it's foot flat on accelerator, turn on ignition, hold for 30 seconds and the adaptive settings return to normal. It'll then learn your driving style over a few miles. Best google and check process but I'm pretty sure thats the way.

PayPal me £35. Much cheaper than your indy at £50.  ;)

Thanks for all the replies-very helpfull

Will try the box reset and see how I get on.
Like I said I do drive it very sedately and the previous owner may have been lead footed..

I may give changing pads n discs a go myself seeing as there are no complicated procedures to trip me up and leave me with a dashboard of error messages!!!

Update

Reset the box yesterday as per instructions suggested..

I've been out on a couple of short trips but couldn't notice much difference, however on the daily commute to work this morning 25mls- what a difference!!!

The changes seem smoother and more importantly seem to occur in the right rev range for my girlie driving style! :-[

Will note mpg now as that may improve slightly...

Thanks all for the advice

The adaption procedure takes a few days to 'relearn' your style, so it should improve going forward.  :)
