Sounds the most likely.  Stat stuck open.

That could be one of the Webasto coolant heater system parts.  I haven't got mine anymore so can't check.  Main engine stat is certainly in the water pump assy on the engine itself.

The 3.0 diesel has more than one stat. If you access the hidden menus in the OBD then you can get the temperature at either location, they should be the same, if not you can tell which stat has failed.

I think the second stat is in the EGR system.

See this thread too, someone else had the stat problem.

I couldn't find the original thread to which I was referring, but this is a similar one, with the same problem.

have this exact problem, bought a thermostat as well, just not had the time to replace it.

i can also check the temperature of the water with the intravee and it goes only as high as 72c or so.. for a long time.

EGR has a thermostat but i don't believe thats related to the coolant temp. EGR is different. as the name implies (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation  is a process of letting exhaust gas into the air intake to control the air temperature).

see here for part numbers etc

btw the E53 also has 2 water pumps. one is electronic. some have had this problem due to the electronic pump going bust.. in my case that works fine. so i suspect it is the thermostat.

I believe that coolant passes through the EGR thermostat otherwise what would it be for?

If all the above tests fail keep a look out for the auxillary pump

Mine wouldn't go above the first tick even after the main stat had been replaced. The heat in the cabin was bobbins too

Turns out it was the aux (electrical) pump which IIRC is next to the rad on the smaller pipes going to the Webasto and Cabin

Car dead centre and cabin nice and toasty....

ps mine was without an EGR thermostat based on the year....and I looked as well...and there was none

Look here

Picture of EGR thermostat....but on my car...No parts found matching your car.

Whereas this shows the setup WTHOUT EGR

if there IS an EGR thermostat (doubtful because those were in pre-ECU type EGRs; nowadays the ECU electronically controls the EGR based on engine temp not through a thermostat), it will control the amount of exhaust gas allowed into the inlet manifold. it will not control coolant flow and theeefore have a direct impact on the engine temp.

I have not had this problem so I cannot confirm wether there is an EGR stat or not, however if you read this thread, it would suggest there is such a thing and coolant does flow through it.

I agree and I don't doubt one exist but the realoem diagrams above show the possiblity of with and without dependant on model/year......a look under the engine sound deadning cover will tell you one way or the other I guess

If there isn't one then it's not that of course
